Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships
Ladies who have not experienced domestic abuse, and who refuse to be victims of domestic abuse might not understand why women stay in abusive relationships. Remember, learning the reasons does not dictate agreement with them. What is important is to understand what they are so that you can be of assistance to women in abusive relationships.
There are at least five principle reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. They are:
1. Low self-esteem
2. Finances
3. A shortage of women's shelters (particularly of shelters for women without dependent children)
4. Desire for the children to remain with their biological father
5. To keep up appearances
Low Self-Esteem
Many of the attitudes held about women, by both men and women, have contributed to the problem of females having low self-esteem. It's no wonder that self-esteem problems are one of the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. When one woman was asked, "Why do you put up with such things out of him?" She replied, "A piece of man is better than no man at all." She shrugged her shoulders as she gave her answer. In her mind, she was not worthy of a "real" man. Therefore, her choices were: be abused or be alone. Being alone didn't sound good, so she opted to tolerate abuse.
Finances
Another of the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships has to do with finances. The economy is not good anywhere in the world nowadays. And, many women failed to take the good advice to not totally rely financially on a man. Therefore, many have come to find themselves in a situation in which they are financially dependent on an abusive man.
No Shelter
Sadly, shelters for abused women are scarce and fill up quickly. To make matters worse, women without dependent children might not have a shelter to which they can go. This is another of the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. Women without children definitely have things easier than women with children. Nevertheless, lack of adequate shelter can be a problem for both situations.
For the Sake of the Children
This is probably one of the most foolish reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. It has been proven that the children can be, and often are, harmed in several ways. Some teen-aged boys have gone to prison after killing their abusive father in an attempt to protect their mother. Many of these boys have suffered terribly in prison. Other boys have "learned" to be abusive in their relationships. And, many of the girls have "learned" to accept the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. Consequently, many little girls grew up to be abused women. What good was done for these children?
Keeping up Appearances
The Christian Bible speaks of the foolishness and of the danger of being vain. Nevertheless, vanity is one of the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. This reason is seen among single and married women. The concern to keep up the appearance of having a relationship and a family is more important than her own life and the lives of any children who are involved.
Confronting the Reasons
Many problems continue without resolution because the reasons and causes for the problem are never truly dealt with. Knowing the reasons abused women hold for allowing themselves to remain victims is the first step in confronting a truly shameful problem in many societies worldwide.
