Is Voodoo a Religion? Two Answers to the Question
The Definition of Religion
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (1974), religion is, "1:The service and worship of God or the supernatural 2: devotion to a religious faith 3: an organized system of faith and worship 4: a personal set of religious beliefs and practices." Therefore, we certainly can answer "yes" to the question: Is voodoo a religion? It is, however, also correct to answer "no" to that same question. How can that be?
Christians affirm that the Holy Bible is their guide book, being the inspired word of God. Consequently, it is logical to see how God's word answers the question: Is voodoo a religion? First, we begin by looking at the biblical definition of the word "religion," which is different from the one given by a dictionary. We read, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world" (KJV, James 1:26). "...Keep himself unspotted from the world" is the part that most people choose to leave out of the biblical definition of religion.
The Gods of the Voodoo Religion
A Christian answer to the question: Is voodoo a religion? can easily involve briefly expounding on the gods worshiped in voodoo and what the Bible says about the living God. Followers of voodoo believe in the principle gods of their religious system. Some of those gods are: the god of fire and lightning, the god of destiny, the god of good, the god of vengeance, and the goddess of the seas. These gods are worshipped, shown devotion, and sacrifices are made to them. This is why many say "yes" when asked: Is voodoo a religion?
Nevertheless, scripture of the Christian Bible reveals much about what the living God has said about who he is in comparison with other gods. The Lord said, "...I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me" (Isaiah 46:9).
All that is worshiped instead of God is an idol; and the scriptures reveal the true identity of all idols. The apostle Paul, a servant of the living God taught, "What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. And I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils" (1 Cor. 10:20)
Yes, idols are devils. They are not neutral spirits as there is no such thing. They are evil spirits; and they seek to be served in the place of the Lord whose word has spoken sharp warnings against the practices that are carried out in voodoo. Is voodoo a religion? Yes it is, according to a dictionary. But, according to the infallible word of the living God, it is the serious sin of idol worship.
