What Is Mallory-Weiss Syndrome?
Mallory-Weiss syndrome is a health condition in which the junction, or link between the esophagus (food tube) and the stomach is torn. Even a small tear can cause life-threatening internal bleeding and the loss of fluid, which could lead to death if prompt and proper medical treatment is not received. Due to the potential for significant hemorrhage (blood loss), the symptoms and signs of shock might present. Patients might also vomit blood and experience melena.
Understandably, the principal sign in Mallory-Weiss syndrome is vomiting. Sometimes this syndrome is suffered in females who are pregnant. Therefore, it is important to know and watch for signs of possible shock to know when to seek medical help.
Risk Factors for Mallory-Weiss Syndrome
The primary life styles that can lead to Mallory Weiss syndrome include eating disorders, particularly those in which a person intentionally induces vomiting. Alcoholism is another high risk factor for this, and other serious health problems.
Eating disorders and alcoholism are not diseases; rather, they cause disease. It has been said over and over, down through the years that individuals suffering from eating disorders and alcoholism need to seek professional help. Many have done that, but still struggle with these problems. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) began as a Christian support group that was most effective. Sadly, much of the United States has turned her back on the things of God and is now in a pitiful state.
Mallory-Weiss syndrome that has been caused by self-induced vomiting or alcoholism does not mean that all hope is lost, if the underlying problem/s are confessed and dealt with.
