Is Spiritual Psychology the Answer for Mental Illness?
A New Approach to Mental Health Care
It can't be disputed that there are serious deficiencies in many of the ancient and modern treatments for mental illness as evidenced by the millions of shattered lives in all the world despite the mental health care those lives receive. Sufferers of mental illness come from every walk of life and background imaginable. It's reasonable, therefore, to conclude that perhaps a new approach to mental health care is long overdue. Ecopsychology and spiritual psychology have been suggested as possible answers to this serious and worldwide problem.
Spiritual Psychology Can Be Secular or Christian
Perfect harmony in mind, body, and soul is the basic message preached by believers in the New Age and adherents to spiritual psychology, ecopsychology, and similar disciplines. What does the Christian Bible say about what might be considered a "religious" or "Christian" form of spiritual psychology? The Christian Bible offers ample information on the spirit realm, mental health and how the two relate. Among the multitudes of people
healed by Jesus were the mentally ill and the insane.
The Link Between Spiritual Health and Mental Illness in the Christian Bible
The scripture of Mark 5:1-8 is one of a number of passages that describe in detail an extremely severe case of mental illness and clearly reveals that the problem was spiritual sickness. Of course there are physical problems and injuries to the brain that can cause various forms of what would be labeled mental illness. However, treating a spiritual illness as though it's a physical one certainly could figure among the reasons for the shameful failure of mental health care workers to cure mental illness.
Mark 5:1-8 says, "And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit (evil spirit), who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no man could bind him, no, not with chains because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Neither could any man tame him. And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him. And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man thou unclean spirit."
Jesus, the Creator and Healer of the physical and spiritual body of man knew that the man of the Gadarenes was spiritually sick with an unclean spirit. The crazy man's spiritual sickness manifested itself as severe mental illness. There's no doubt that it appeared as insanity to the people who saw him. How many people who have been declared insane remain in their mental captivity because their spiritual sickness is denied by mental health care workers? The man of the Gadarenes remained in his condition until he called on the Lord for deliverance from demonic possession, which is often behind what is labeled as mental illness and insanity.
