Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Scriptures on Confession of Sin
Excuses for Sin
Many people flat out refuse to acknowledge as sin the things that God's word calls sin such as
homosexuality (Romans 1:26-27). Although many Christians freely accept that wrong is what God says is wrong, some of them have a habit of making excuses for sins from which they are unwilling to cease. Scriptures on confession of sin appear in the Bible as early as the book of Genesis. When the Lord asked Adam if he had eaten from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Adam presented excuses for his sin. He said to God, "...The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat" (KJV, Gen. 3:12). When the Lord asked Eve if she had eaten from
the forbidden tree, she also presented excuses for her sin, saying, "...The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat" (Gen. 3:13).
These scriptures on confession of sin recount man's first attempts to make excuses for his disobedience. According to Adam, his sin was Eve's fault; and according to Eve, her sin was the Devil's fault. This type of excuse making has continued down through the ages as though it were "inherited" from the original parents. Despite the excuses, Adam and Eve received severe punishment; they received the death penalty for themselves and for all of their posterity (Gen. 2:17, Rom. 5:12). Making excuses for disobedience does not in any way create an escape for the consequences of our actions.
Instruction from Scriptures on Confession of Sin
How do we confess our sins and to whom do we confess if we want forgiveness? The scripture of 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
There are two important truths taught in the scripture in 1 John. We learn that forgiveness is conditional by the use of the word "if;" we must confess our disobedience. We also learn that unrighteousness needs to be cleansed. God not only forgives sin, he also cleanses from unrighteousness.
Among other scriptures on confession of sin is St. Luke 11:4, which is part of what is known as the Our Father prayer. The Lord Jesus teaches his followers to pray, "...Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name...forgive us our sins..." (St. Luke 11:2-4). We learn that confession of sin is made not to a man, but directly to God. The word of God is man's instruction in righteousness. It is the doctrine of
Christ and it offers correction so that we know what God requires, what he accepts, and what he rejects (2 Tim. 3:16). These scriptures on confession of sin are
the word of God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
