Benefits of Myrrh: An Herb Mentioned in the Christian Bible
What Exactly Are Some of the Benefits of Myrrh?
A true list of myrrh benefits will include its antiseptic, astringent, expectorant, and stimulant properties. An antiseptic is a substance that kills and or inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause infection, which can lead to decay of tissue. The ancients might not have understood what an antiseptic is. However, they were well aware of the benefits of myrrh when it came to treating sores on the body and even ulcers in the mouth. The parts of myrrh that are used are the powdered gum and resin. Gum is a sticky substance that's secreted from a plant and one that hardens as it dries. Resin is obtained from gum, sometimes called sap.
A teaspoon of powdered gum steeped in a pint of water that is boiling hot, but not actually boiling, makes a tea, also called an infusion. If no other safe cleanser/germ killer is available, that myrrh tea can be used to wash sores on the body and to help to disinfect ulcers in the mouth when used as a mouthwash. The benefits of myrrh include not only its antiseptic properties, but also its healing properties. Due to the astringent properties this wonderful herb also has, many people have used it in the natural treatment of pyorrhea of the gums.
Benefits of Myrrh for Respiratory Problems
Myrrh is believed to have expectorant properties. Some sufferers of
breathing problems have taken a look at the herb for internal use. Please note, however, that Myrrh used internally can be EXTREMELY dangerous. Does that mean that it cannot be used internally? According to Back To Eden by Jethro Kloss, some people do choose to use it; and they are successful. However, it is NOT recommended.
Myrrh in the Christian Bible
In the Christian Bible we read, "When they (the wise men) were come into the house, they saw the young child (the baby Jesus) with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh" (KJV, Matthew 2:11).
Scripture uses the word "treasure" in reference to the wise men's gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This lets us know that the people in biblical times obviously considered the benefits of myrrh to be of great value.
