Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Two coworkers discussing what they wanted for lunch decided on pizza. They then began discussing where they would go for pizza. One mentioned that there was a Pizza Hut about five minutes away. Although the other agreed that it would be nice to stay close to work and stated that Pizza Hut serves good pizza, she wanted to go somewhere different, because Pizza Hut was familiar. Such was her desire to go to one of the new pizza parlors that she preferred to pay more money, be rushed, and chance not liking a different parlor pizza rather than go to the familiar parlor. It is true that familiarity breeds contempt in many people. Unfortunately, what many of these people don't realize is that their contempt will often breed their own unhappiness. How? What are some real-life examples of personal unhappiness resulting from contempt for the familiar?
Many people who had successfully used all natural, herbal medicines to prevent, treat, and cure a variety of illnesses eagerly abandoned effective home remedies to embrace new pharmaceutical drugs. How many law suits have been filed after so many of those health-destroying, man-made "medicines" caused damage to the body, and in some cases, death? Reliance on folk medicine was common in times past. When the new, modern drugs appeared, many embraced them to their own detriment. Yes, familiarity breeds contempt, but it does not have to.
An episode of a popular television sitcom depicted two of the show's characters as singles looking for a significant other. They both signed up with a computerized dating service, but were not honest in the information they put in their profiles. One thing about which they lied was the ethnic group to which they belonged. The one did not know the other had signed up with the service until the night of their date, which the computer had arranged, having matched them. They are embarrassed when they meet, each now knowing that the other signed up with the service. Nevertheless, they decide to stay on the date and begin talking. During their conversation, the one discovers that the other has been dishonest in the writing of the profile. The audience gets a good chuckle when they say to each other, "You mean we're both just plain white people?" This may elicit laughter, but the fact that familiarity breeds contempt is no laughing matter. It gets in the way of the search for genuine happiness when the search is after who or what is new and different and the familiar is avoided simply because it is familiar.
Often, familiarity breeds contempt even when speaking of spiritual matters. Numerous people in nations where the gospel is restricted, literally risk their lives by owning and reading the Christian Bible. A good number of residents in the United States, on the other hand, are fascinated with almost any religion that is not a "form" of Christianity and that does not involve the scriptures of the Christian bible, which has been in North America since the days of the pilgrims.
Many followers of Christ outside of the United States risk their lives to serve the word of God while that same word of God is pushed aside with contempt by many in the U.S.A., because it is "familiar." Familiarity breeds contempt, which breeds blindness to worth and value of even what is common, which breeds unnecessary lack as that valuable thing or person is thrown aside. Lack breeds discontentment, which eventually breeds anger.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. My marriage has suffered because my husband has sought satisfaction outside of the marriage. God knows that I love him and desire to be the only woman in his life. What is the cure for familiarity?
