Single Christians
The Worldwide Problem of Single Christians
Living in a large city tends to increase a person's chances of finding his or her soul mate. Most single Christians, however, who are truly dedicated to obedience to God's word find it next to impossible to find a genuine Christian spouse no matter where they live. This is one of many serious problems that persist in the Christian church. It's serious because a good number of these believers grow weary of holding on and holding out as the months turn into years and the years into decades. They grow weary of being ignored by their Christian brethren and "friends" and of trying to make themselves content in the face of lack in such an important and delicate area of life. The problem of single believers finding the mate God has for them knows no national barriers. Sadly, this very problem is often the nagging "thorn" that eventually causes many single Christians to backslide.
Single Christians Who Are Not Christian
If there are so many single Christians out there looking for a mate, why can't they find each other? Are there not entire networks on-line and off-line that are dedicated to Christian singles dating? It really does appear that there are plenty of Christian fish in the sea, but many "Christians" simply are not obedient to God's word.
Bible-believing Christians, now labeled as fundamentalists, barriers to world peace and fanatics, do not engage in certain activities or lead certain lifestyles. Single Christians who love the Lord are not looking for someone who sees no problem with things such as shacking up, the use of profanity, drinking and/or smoking in bars, and the list could go on. When these things are not the problem, there's often the problem of other beliefs that are seriously anti-Christian such as the denial of the divinity of Christ or the truth that Jesus is the only way of salvation. Single Christian ladies also must be concerned about anti-biblical attitudes regarding women in service to God.
Attitudes Against Christian Singles Dating
Almost every church has at least one marriage ministry; many of them have several ministries for couples. How many of these same churches have even one ministry to single Christians? Concern for Christian singles dating is virtually obsolete in "Christian" churches. In fact, most of the few people who have even approached their pastors or church leaders about at least having a support group for the singles have been met with disapproval. They are often warned against any attempts to encourage Christian singles dating as though such an activity would be sin.
What are some of the reasons for these attitudes against single Christians and Christian singles dating? The reasons are numerous; however, most of them fall into the following specific categories of attitudes:
1. Happily married people who don't care about the problem of single Christians
2. Unhappily married people who don't want to see single Christians marry and the single Christians who allow themselves to be controlled by these attitudes
3. People who don't believe in waiting for a Christian mate - most people put God on the back burner when it comes to this area of life
Other Factors that Don't Help the Problem of Single Believers
1. Single Christian themselves who are concerned only about self, not with banding together so that single believers mutually help one another.
2. Single Christians who take lightly the Lord's command to share the gospel to win the lost to him. The husband or wife of some single believers is among the unsaved to whom most Christians do not bother to introduce the Lord Jesus or to learn God's word well enough to answer legitimate questions asked about God.
3. Ridiculous standards in a mate
The Lord is concerned about the spiritual and natural life of his sheep (I Peter 5:7 ). We, therefore, believe that the Christian church and Christian ministries, unless they are directed to a specific group of people or focus on a specific problem, should also be concerned about the spiritual and natural life of God's people.
