Meaning of Dreams: The Christian Bible Versus Psychology
Psychology on the Meaning of Dreams
According to David G. Meyers, author of Psychology in Everyday Life - second edition, "Psychological research has overturned many popular ideas--that familiarity breeds contempt, that dreams predict the future...." Is this true? It can be said that psychological research has also overturned many popular ideas about the diagnostic methods of psychology--they don't work. This was proven by the experiment lead by David L. Rosenhan who demonstrated that psychologists in a mental health hospital failed miserably at distinguishing mentally ill patients from perfectly sane "undercover" patients. This study is one of the most profound of all psychological research, because it unmasked the many falsehoods taught in the "science" of psychology. What does the Christian Bible say about the meaning of dreams? Do they predict the future?
Joseph's Dreaming Predicted the Future?
Medical science, which, unlike psychology, is a true science, has proven that dreaming can be caused by diet, by thoughts, and by a bump on the head among other things. Such dreams do not necessarily predict the future. But, are there times when the meaning of dreams is a prediction of future events? According to the Christian Bible, yes.
"And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren; and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed. For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance (bowed) to my sheaf. And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words" (KJV, Genesis 37:5-8).
Later in Genesis, it is recorded, "And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land; and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them..." (Genesis 42:6,9).
The Christian Bible cannot be any plainer in revealing that the meaning of dreams is sometimes the very accurate prediction of future events. The dreaming of Joseph is only one of numerous accounts of the meaning of dreams being directly associated with the prediction of the future. One of the four main ideas of psychology is critical thinking. Critical thinking requires questioning information. It requires being suspicious sometimes of the validity and/or infallibility of what is being affirmed. Ironically, psychologists are among the very people who hardly ever put critical thinking into practice.
David Meyers also wrote, "Some people think psychology merely proves what we already know and then dresses it in jargon: 'So what else is new--you get paid for using fancy methods to tell me what my grandmother knew?'" Mr. Meyers responds with, "But consider how easy it is to draw the bull's eye after the arrow strikes." It should be obvious that this response is nothing more than Dr. Meyers' desperate attempt to plant doubt concerning the truth about psychology--it is practically useless. People would do well to continue to listen to grandma, and above all to listen to God.
