Will the Christian Church Be Raptured During the Tribulation?
While this is by no means a thorough study on the question of whether the Christian church will be raptured during the tribulation, it does emphasize the need to consider all scripture before coming to a conclusion. The scripture of Matthew 24:39 - 42 is one of the most popular biblical passages used to support the belief that the Christian church will be raptured during the tribulation. It reads, "And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away. So shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field. The one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."
Raptured During the Tribulation?
Acceptance of the belief that the Christian church will be raptured during the tribulation is much more widespread than rejection of this comforting thought. Believing what sounds good, however, doesn't make it true. Although the scripture of Matthew 24:39-42 must be accepted when studying this subject because it is God's word, other scripture that does not appear to support teaching that the church will be raptured during the tribulation also must be considered.
One point that Bible teachers have made regarding this question is the fact that many Christian believers in the West, particularly the United States, seek to escape the end time persecution that so many of their brethren in Christ have been enduring for years. Some have urged North American believers to ask themselves why they would be spared suffering through tribulation for faith in Christ while their brethren in Christ in other parts of the world continue to be martyred.
The other "side" of the teachings regarding whether the Christian church will be raptured during tribulation is found in scriptures such as St. John 17:9 - 15 which records the beautiful prayer that the Lord Jesus himself prayed for his followers who lived in his time and who were to be born. We see that he speaks of his brethren (his followers) being kept from evil, but not taken out of the world to be protected from suffering the consequences of evil.
Jesus said, "I pray for them. I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine. And all mine are thine and thine are mine. And I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name. Those that thou gavest me I have kept and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition that the scripture might be fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world even as I am not of the world. I pray NOT that thou shouldest take them OUT of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil."
