How the Teachings of the Bible Are Related to the Law of Attraction and Positive Thinking
God-Inspired Positive Thinking
The principle difference between New Age philosophy and teachings on the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction lies in the fact that the true Christian believer's act of positive thinking is fueled by faith in God, not in a "
universal mind." He or she doesn't attempt to think things into existence that are not in agreement with God's commands or will. Followers of Christ think those things that are approved by God and that have been requested of him by
faith, which is itself obedience to the Lord as defined by the Christian Bible.
Positive Thinking and Faith in God According to Biblical Scripture
The scripture of Genesis 15:1-6 is one of the best biblical examples of positive thinking inspired by the Lord himself and how it relates to faith in God. Abram, whose named was later changed by God to Abraham (Gen. 17:5), made known to the Lord his request for a child during a vision in which God appeared to him. God not only promised Abram a son, he also instructed this servant of his to do what New Agers would call positive thinking. Not only would Abram be blessed with a child (a son), his offspring would come to be so numerous that they would be innumerable as the stars of the heavens, which literally cannot be counted.
Abram was instructed by God in positive thinking when the Lord told him to look up at the sky and see if he could count the stars and then to relate this to his thoughts of the promised birth of a son and inumerable offspring. Genesis 15:1-6 reads, "After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram. I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward. And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed and lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad and said, Look now toward heaven and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them. And he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the Lord and he counted it to him for righteousness."
The
positive thinking that Abram carried out was fueled by faith in the word of God, not by his own devices. Abram wasn't relying on his positive thinking to activate a law of attraction; he was simply obeying what God told him to do. Does God tell all of his servants from whom he has received requests for blessings within his will to do positive thinking? Scripture answers that question in the affirmative when we read, "Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests by made known to God. And the peace of God, which passesth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, THINK on these things" (Philippians 4:6-8).
Each Christian believer should be able to think of the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and praiseworthy that relate to his or her personal request lifted to God. He or she should then exercise faith in God thinking on these things to practice positive thinking God's way. Remember also that thoughts always lead to action; healthy and wholesome thoughts will lead to healthy and wholesome action. Unhealthy and sinful thoughts will lead to sinful actions, which is why Christian believers must learn to practice "Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of
Christ."
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
