Hearing the Voice of God Through the "Modern" Word of God
The Word of God in Biblical Times
When Moses was called by God to lead the children of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, we are told that, "...
the angel of the Lord (the Lord himself) appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. And he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here I am" (KJV, Exodus 3:2-4).
Numerous Christians would like to see something as miraculous as a burning bush that doesn't burn and would like for God to call them by name so they can answer, "Here I am," and have a personal talk with the Lord about their problems and questions; and receive any instructions they need about their ministry.
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, Christians read of how the Word of God (God himself) appeared and talked to people in visions, in signs, and in wonders such as when he appeared to Abram (Abraham) in a vision (Genesis 15:1). It was during this vision that Abram actively communicated to God his desire for a child. His wife, Sara, was barren. Again, many Christians would like to hear the voice of God in ways similar to these: signs, wonders, and visions. They believe that the word of God would be so much clearer and that they would not have to fight the good fight of faith in the midst of confusion.
Hearing the Voice of God in Modern Times
The Christian Bible is no less the word of God than the things the Lord spoke to Moses, Abraham, Joshua, Gideon, Elijah, Elisha, and so many others. In fact, Jesus taught that God's servants under the New Covenant serve under a better Testament (II Cor. 3:6, Mat. 11:11). Why then do today's Christian believers have so much more trouble hearing the voice of God than the saints in biblical times? There are several reasons why hearing God's voice seems to be something that perished with the saints of old. Failure to get an understanding of God's word is the principle problem of today because the vast majority of
Bible studies, including those that are labeled "in-depth" strategically avoid the "hard" questions about life and the meat of God's word.
What's important to keep in mind is that neither the Old Testament saints nor those who lived under the New Covenant escaped the frustration that accompanies confusion when it comes to hearing God's voice. Abraham and Sarah waited many years to receive the blessing of the birth of their son Isaac. During their wait, they decided to have Abraham have a child with Hagar, Sarah's handmaid. Perhaps they thought that when God told Abraham that he would give him a son that the child wouldn't be conceived in Sarah, because what was taking so long? It's not at all unreasonable or illogical to realize that this couple experienced confusion over what God was doing--or not doing.
The apostle Paul to whom God gave many revelations about the spiritual work of the Lord Jesus writes about the despair that he and other believers with him endured. There's an undeniable connection between depression, despair and confusion. We will despair if we have no hope and often we will not have hope when we are confused about what God is doing or not doing. Paul wrote, "For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life" (II Cor. 1:8).
Later, Paul says in no uncertain terms that even true Christian believers experience confusion in their service to God. This is why he wrote, "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. We are PERPLEXED, but not in despair" (II Cor. 4:8).
Confusion will be experienced at times regardless of how the
word of God is given to us. We are to continue seeking to hear the voice of God whether he speaks in a sign or wonder, a vision, or the written word that we have, called the Christian Bible composed of the Old and New Testaments.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
