What Is In Depth Bible Study?
A Generic Description of In Depth Bible Study
Many people describe in depth Bible study as a time when students focus on the smallest details and on every word in the Bible passages to be discussed for a particular lesson. Some view it as a time when the student or the instructor includes historical information that helps to set the scene of the events that took place in biblical times in Israel and the nations surrounding Israel. Still others might think of in depth Bible study as a time to deal with the "hard" questions of life to which true believers would like scriptural answers.
It's probably a good idea to consider in depth Bible study a combination of all three descriptions because focusing on every detail, setting the scene, and tackling real-life issues from a Bible-based Christian perspective cause students to experience the depth of God's word. This doesn't mean, however, intense study will always include these three elements or that every time you read the Bible you will be doing in depth Bible study. These points are considered only to help you evaluate the benefit you receive when you study the scriptures.
How to Evaluate the Depth of Your Bible Studies
Following are some questions that you might want to ask yourself or the instructor of your Bible class to determine the depth of your studies:
1. Are you realizing new truths after completing a Bible lesson?
2. Are you learning how to put those truths into action in your life?
3. Do you find yourself sometimes coming under conviction as you learn more about what God requires from his servants?
4. Are you frequently studying the same scriptures over and over while skipping over scriptures that you or your instructor finds hard to understand?
5. Is it more important to you or to your instructor to cover a certain amount of material in a specified amount of time than to take however much time is needed to learn a truth?
6. Do you or does your instructor take the time to deal with related questions that arise during the study?
7. How often do you or your instructor study directly from the Bible without the use of recommended Christian books that can sometimes interfere with comprehension of spiritual truths?
8. Do you or does your instructor ever tackle questions about the paranormal, particularly the dangers of the paranormal?
The last question should be emphasized because the average Christian church in America today, including those who claim to offer in depth Bible study, tend to avoid questions about the paranormal as though they were the plague. If the warnings of the Bible concerning the dangers of the paranormal are never studied or taught, the believer will not be prepared to answer questions or to deal with the many questions surrounding this important topic. As a Christian God's word reminds you, "...Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" (KJV, I Peter 3:15).
