Can You Become a Chef If You Do Not Study Culinary Arts?
Fortunately, more and more people around the world are waking up to the reality that earning a college degree by no means guarantees a good job. Sometimes it does not guarantee a job at all. Home cooks who desire to become a chef are in the category with many other people who want to work in professions for which they can train at home and/or on the job. Yes, they can study culinary arts that are taught in many excellent cook books such as the Better Homes and Gardens series; and they can learn from the very best teacher--real, hands-on experience in the kitchen.
A Chef Who Did Not Study Culinary Arts?
The new television series, Master Chef, is just more proof that it is not necessary to formally study culinary arts in order to become a chef--even a master chef. Not everyone can afford to pay the ever rising costs of tuition to attend college. And, not everyone has a schedule that will allow him or her to meet the many ridiculous academic demands placed on students, few of whom are even prepared for the work world after graduation.
In times past, a person learned his or her profession through real world experience. In other words, "schooling" was a continual aprenticeship, until the student had mastered all the knowledge their teacher passed on. Young home cooks began their walk on the road to become a chef by learning the basics of food preparation from someone in the family, usually mom. Other home cooks took jobs as dish washers in restaurants where they eventually began to informally study culinary arts by working with the experienced cooks and chefs.
A Unique Type of Chef
As interest in ancient and heirloom foods continues to grow worldwide, along with a fervent interest in returning to all natural eating, there is a growing demand for chefs who cook healthy dishes. These people often will have to be very creative if they want to specialize in preparing succulent and truly healthy dishes. The truth is that very few of them will ever learn the things they'll need to know to specialize in fine healthy dining, if they study culinary arts in a traditional college.
Also, some higly experienced and very talented home cooks who are Christian might not want to learn which wines to serve with a meal, because social drinking might be something in which they do not believe. And, some cooks who do not believe in eating certain foods such as lobster might not benefit as much from a traditional study of culinary arts as another who does not object to eating certain animals. There is even the question of animal cruelty. It is disturbing to some people to drop a live lobster in boiling water just for the sake of cooking with truly fresh ingredients.
If you want to become a chef, even a master chef, but do not want, or cannot go to college to study culinary arts, you can still achieve your goal. Even if you do not have a mentor right now, begin to train yourself with books, videos, and the best trainer of all--experience. Happy cooking!
