Are You Terrified of Death?
The reasons for which people are terrified of death are many. They include:
1. A frightening near death experience
2. Lingering fear of the unknown
3. Living with the knowledge of the inevitable (the knowledge that they must die some day)
4. Not knowing what they will physically suffer upon dying
5. Not knowing what they will suffer mentally upon dying
6. Not knowing whether they will suffer spiritually upon dying
7. Not knowing if they will exist in some state somewhere for the rest of eternity
Indeed these are valid reasons for being terrified of death. Preoccupation with having to one day die has been the root of hatred against parents and against God in many people. What are some truths that, if received, can not only be of some comfort, but also actually deliver from the torment that it is to be terrified of death?
First, there is a need to recognize that it is not normal to live with an intense worry about dying. People who have had a frightening near death experience are an exception to this statement. Ask yourself why is it that you are so afraid of dying, more so than the majority of people who also must one day face death, but who are not preoccupied with leaving this world.
Realize that it is likely that once such a fear has set in, it probably will never be fully overcome unless it is destroyed by the power of God. The Christian Bible offers the answer to those who are terrified of death. But, few have accepted it, because it comes from the Word of God (Jesus) whom they hate. Nevertheless, a person who truly wants to be delivered can ask the Lord to cleanse his heart of hatred against the One who offers Himself (eternal life) and will never leave us even in death. This One is the Son of God.
Daily obedience must follow a truly sincere prayer, or you pray in vain. Everyone's life and spiritual condition is different; and only the Lord fully knows and understands us. However, this is a starting point regardless of who you are and what your spiritual condition might be.
Consider divine counsel to those who are terrified of death. The Word of God says, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Jesus) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, this is, the devil. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage"(Hebrews 2:14-15).
To live in fear of death is to live in bondage.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a SOUND MIND" (2 Tim. 1:7).
