Surprise Death: Do Some People Die Without Warning?
A surprise death can be defined as a death without warning or an unexpected death. Many people believe that a person knows when his time to leave this world is near. Dreams and phenomena such as visions are among the well-founded reasons why some say that there is no such thing as an unexpected death. One phenomenon that is particularly disturbing to many people involves reflections in a mirror. Some believe that if a person sees a ghost-like image of himself in a mirror that it is a sure sign of impending death. However, the Bible gives us reason to believe that death is not always predicted. According to the Bible, does death come suddenly or with warning?
No Surprise Death for the Apostle Paul
The apostle Paul, a servant of Jesus, wrote of his fast-approaching time to leave the world. In a letter to Timothy, he wrote, "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day..." (KJV, 2 Timothy 4:6-8).
This is not the only scripture in the Christian Bible that portrays a person who knows that he will soon die. But does this mean that every person will escape a surprise death? If this were true, many would rely on "death bed repentance." Death bed repentance is the idea that people can live the life they want, wait until they know that they are about to die, and then receive Jesus as Savior.
The truth is that in the biblical scriptures, death sometimes comes without warning; it can be totally unexpected. The scripture of Ecclesiastes 9:12 says, "For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them."
It might be said that the scriptural mention of an "evil time" should not be equated to a surprise death. There is no doubt that trying times can come suddenly upon people. However, take notice that the scripture spoke of fish being caught in nets, and of birds in snares. Fish are not caught in nets to be released into the waters from which they came. The net for them is death. The same is said of the hunting of birds.
If there were no such thing as a surprise death, why does the Lord Jesus warn to repent? We could all simply wait until we are close to leaving this world before receiving him as Lord.
"Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, [TODAY] if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts..." (Hebrews 3:7-8).
