Are Christian Murderers Simply Misguided Christians?
Christian Murderers in New Testament Times
First and foremost, no one can be a Christian and a killer at the same time. In other words, there are no Christian killers. There are murderers. There are Christians; and there are murderers who refer to themselves as Christians. But, none of this makes it possible to live as a Christian and think nothing of killing other people. Bible-believing followers of Jesus are getting tired of people who don't know what the Bible says, putting a Christian label on everything and everyone who claims Christianity.
One of the best examples of this is calling the people who participated in and/or supported the atrocities committed during the Holocaust, "misguided Christians." Why are they called Christians at all? They are called Christians simply because they went to a church, kept a cross, said they believed in God, and attempted to justify their actions with statements about the Jews killing Jesus. So, instead of calling these people Christian murderers, they are called misguided Christians, which sounds better and cleaner. However, words do not have the power to clean up anything that is filthy.
The Example of Saul of Tarsus
The apostle Paul was Saul of Tarsus before his conversion to Christ. In the seventh chapter of the New Testament book of Acts, we have the account of the murder of a Christian named, Stephen. Chapter eight begins, "And Saul was consenting unto his (Stephen's) death" (KJV, Acts 8:1). We go on to read, "As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women, committed them to prison" (Act 8:3).
In the ninth chapter of Acts, we learn of Saul's conversion to Christ, after which he was called the apostle Paul. Later Paul wrote about himself saying, "Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious. But, I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief" (1 Tim. 1:13).
According to biblical scripture, Saul of Tarsus was not a misguided Christian. He was not a Christian murderer, because he was not a Christian at all. In Saul's mind, he was doing a service to God by persecuting Christians to death. But, scripture lets us know that though he truly was in ignorance, he was NOT a misguided Christian. Again, he was not a Christian at all. The account of his conversion to Christ clearly reveals that he did not know who Christ was. Who can be a Christian and not even know who Christ is? The very definition of the word Christian is a follower of Christ. Remember, Saul asked, "Who art thou Lord?" Christ responded, "...I am Jesus whom thou persecutest... (Acts 9:5).
Now, are the "Christian" killers of the Holocaust different, because they said that they did know Christ, and even called him Lord? Our answer is found in Matthew 7:21, in which Jesus warned, "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but, he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
The Example of King David
Some who are in favor of labeling Christian murderers as "misguided Christians" remind that though king David was truly a servant of God, he committed murder--first-degree murder, and adultery. They point out that what king David did was even worse than Saul of Tarsus did before his name was changed to Paul. David, unlike Saul, knew God. He was neither mistaken nor misguided when he plotted murder and adultery. Certainly, if he remained a child of God after committing willful sin, should not we think that Christian murderers remain Christians?
Again, scripture has already been given that establishes that people who commit mass murder in the name of God under these New Testament times are not Christians at all. But, what about David remaining a servant of God even after committing murder and adultery? What is different about him compared to the so-called "misguided Christians" who kill?
David prayed to the Lord, saying, "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions. And my sin is ever before me...Create in me a clean heat, O God, and renew a right spirit within me" (Psalm 51:1-3,10).
When did the "Christian" murderers of the Holocaust or any other time in history during which ungodly atrocities were carried out by "believers" ever repent? Did they ever acknowledge their transgressions as did king David? Did they even once ask the Lord to give them a clean heart and a right spirit as David asked God to do for him? Here is all the difference in the world. Where there is no acknowledgement of sin, there is no repentance. Where there is no repentance and asking for forgiveness, there is no salvation. Where there is no salvation, there is no Savior, Christ. Where there is no Christ, there is no Christianity.
