What Are the Basic Beliefs of Christianity?
The basic beliefs of Christianity are literally repeated throughout the Bible from the Old Testament book of Genesis, the first book of the word of God, to the very last New Testament book of Revelation. Different words are used, but the message remains the same and always centers around Jesus of Nazareth, sometimes referred to as the Son of God. However, the following scriptures deal with questions about the basic beliefs of Christianity. Some explanation of these biblical passages is required and presented here for full comprehension.
The Famous Scripture of St. John 3:16
The passage of St. John 3:16 is often quoted, but rarely understood. It says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Far too many people, including Christians, lack understanding of the words believeth and begotten. An explanation of the biblical, not the natural, meaning of begotten is beyond this article; however, understanding what it means to believe on the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is crucial to understanding the basic beliefs of Christianity.
To believe on Christ, according to the Bible, consists of so much more than simply accepting an idea that he exists. True belief compels obedience; this is what scripture repeatedly says. Romans 10:16 reads, "But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report (preaching)?" Simply put, if the people had believed, they would have obeyed. The apostle Peter gives a more forceful reminder of what it means to believe on Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God when he said, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God, and if it first begin at us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?" One of the basic beliefs of Christianity states that salvation is obtained by obedience to the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth.
The Way, Truth, and Life
Jesus stated another of the basic beliefs of Christianity in St. John 14:6 when he taught, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." He could not have made it any clearer that he's the only way to the Father. Some people mistakenly believe that they can accept the Son without the Father or the Father without the Son. This can't be since the Father can only be reached through the Son with whom he is always in perfect agreement.
This truth is repeated in numerous scriptures which are difficult to comprehend even for the "babe" in Christ (new believer) and the very young believer. Among the scriptures that reinforce this is that of Acts 4:10, 12; it reads, "Be it known unto you all and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of
Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead even by him doth this man stand here before you whole (healed). Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved." These are the basic beliefs of Christianity; they all rest on Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, Author and Finisher of the
faith.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
