What Is a Teratogenic Drug?
Definition of a Teratogenic Drug
A teratogenic drug is a drug that might jeopardize the normal growth and development of an unborn baby. There are many Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drugs that respond to this definition. Some pose more of a risk than others. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are among the health care providers who must learn about teratogenic drugs. The times that they must provide medical care to pregnant patients are many. Therefore, it's very important to understand the health risks posed by the administration of the drugs they are allowed to give to patients.
Drug Categories
The FDA has outlined five drug categories which reveals the potential harm that a teratogenic drug might do. They are as follows:
Category A - These drugs do no pose any risk to the health of a fetus at any time during pregnancy.
Category B - The drugs in this category were added based on two types of studies. 1. Testing the drug in animals has not proven to cause harm to the fetus, but sufficient testing in people has not been carried out. 2. Also in this category are drugs that have not caused harm to the fetus in people during the first or third trimester, but have harmed the fetus during these same periods in animals.
Category C - A teratogenic drug in this category is one that has not been adequately studied in people and/or animals, or that has caused harm in pregnant animals.
Category D - A teratogenic drug in this category is one that definitely has the potential to cause harm to the fetus of a pregnant woman. Nevertheless, it might be administered in the practice of emergency medicine when the good it can do outweighs the potential harm. Depending on the developmental stage of the unborn child, there might not be any chance of survival outside of the womb (in the event of the death of the mother). Aspirin is a category D drug. Why don't more people learn to return to the all natural medicinal herbs that God provided, instead of trusting in man-made chemical "medicines?" Even mild pain relief can be achieved with some herbs (see link at end of article).
Category X - The risks to the health of the fetus have been clearly demonstrated in people. These drugs are not administered to pregnant patients.
The findings stated in these categories describing the effects of a teratogenic drug are not thoroughly
trusted by everyone. After all, how many dangerous drugs have the FDA approved and "stamped" as safe? Many.
