Physical Discipline of Children: What Does the Bible Say?
Belief in physical discipline of children in no way translates into support of child abuse. Belief in rejecting physical punishment of kids, however, is in direct opposition to the instruction that the Lord gives parents. What does the Bible say about this subject?
We read, "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child. But, the rod of correction shall drive it far from him" (Gideons Int'l Bible, Proverbs 22:15). We also read, "Withhold NOT correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell" (Proverbs 23:13).
The fact that child abusers attempt to use scriptures such as the ones in proverbs to harm children does not remove the truth. The truth still remains that the word of God is in sharp disagreement with attempting to eliminate physical discipline of children when they misbehave.
It is not a coincidence that when parents spanked children in obedience to the eternal Parent, God himself, the United States was a safer and better place to live. It was not a common thing for children to murder other children, babies, and adults. However, it is becoming more and more common as we reject the parenting guidelines that the Lord gave, in favor of what only appears to be good alternatives.
