What Is the Fruit of the Tree of Life?
"And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us...now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. So he drove out the man (Adam and Eve). And he placed at the east of the garden of Eden, Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep (guard) the way of the tree of life" (KJV, Genesis 3:22, 24).
Scripture in Genesis lets us know that the fruit of the tree of life was real, and could be eaten by Adam and Eve, even after they had sinned. Had they been allowed to eat the fruit, the Lord says that they would have lived forever. This is why they were forced to leave the garden and the path to the tree of life was divinely guarded.
Spiritual Fruit of the Tree of Life
Eden no longer exists. And, there is no reason to think that it survived the great deluge by which God destroyed the old world. However, the fruit of the tree of life still exists. But, where is that tree? What is its fruit; and how do we eat from the tree to obtain life eternal?
We read, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the LIFE..." (St. John 14:6). Yes, Christ is eternal life. Following him does not mean that a person will escape natural death, because, "...It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Nevertheless, believers who fall asleep (die) in Christ, cannot be held by death (1 Cor. 15:15-29, 51-57). They will rise to live eternally because they ate the fruit of the tree of life--Jesus.
The Good Olive Tree
Jesus is the good olive tree of which the apostle Paul speaks in the eleventh chapter of Romans. Paul reminds the Christian gentiles that they are from a wild olive tree, and that they have been grafted into the natural, and good olive tree, who is Jesus (Romans 11:13-17).
Eating Spiritual Fruit of the Tree of Life
"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed" (St. John 6:53-55).
In this passage, the Lord is explaining that he is the tree of life and that the fruit of the tree of life is to eat his flesh and drink his blood. But, what does that mean? Again, Christ explains. We read, "Jesus saith unto them, My MEAT is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work" (St. John 4:34). Jesus, the man, explained that his "meat," which is his food, is to do the Father's will. Jesus, the Lord, requires that his servants understand that their "meat" is to do his will as he is their Lord. Jesus asked, "And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say (my will)" (Luke 6:46)?
