Jesus Drank Wine, Or Did He?
Wine or Grape Juice?
When biblical scripture speaks of wine, it's important to know whether the passage speaks of wine or grape juice. As long as there is no distinction made, it is very easy to lend biblical support to the belief that Jesus drank wine.
The scripture of Deuteronomy 11:14 records when God said to Israel, "...I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil." The scriptures speak of people gathering corn and wine. Alcohol cannot be gathered from nature. Only the natural juice of grapes can be gathered. This is only one of numerous scriptures that lets us know that the word "wine" is "generic" in that it can mean natural grape juice or it can refer to alcoholic wine. The reader must distinguish from the use of the word in the passage. This is the first truth to remember before automatically assuming that Jesus drank wine.
Jesus, a Winebibber?
In Matthew 11:19 the words of Christ are, "The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber...." This is one of the scriptures often quoted to support the popular belief that Jesus drank wine and that it must therefore be perfectly okay to drink socially. Do we forget what else people said about Christ? We read, "Then answered the Jews, and said unto him (Jesus), Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil" (St. John 8:48)?
Are we to believe that Jesus drank alcoholic wine simply because others called him gluttonous and a winebibber (drinker of wine)? If we are going to say that Christ is who and what others said he was, then we would have to also say that he was a Samaritan and possessed of a devil--because that is also what others who were hostile against him said. The conclusion is that no true follower of Christ will accept the lies that his enemies spread about him.
People see, hear, understand, and believe what they want to believe. Likewise, people blind themselves, stop up their ears, suddenly loose understanding, and reject what they don't want to believe. The Lord himself allows man free will. That free will, however, does not make truth a falsehood, or a falsehood truth.
