What are respiratory alkalosis symptoms and signs?
Hyperventilation Respiratory Alkalosis Definition
Before learning respiratory alkalosis symptoms and signs, let's define the condition. When the pH of the blood exceeds 7.45 as a result of hyperventilation (above normal breathing rate), alkalosis has set in. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic, and 14 being the most basic. The neutral point is 7. So, we can see that the body needs to stay within a very narrow range between 7.35 and 7.45.
Respiratory Alkalosis Symptoms and Signs
A symptom is what cannot be seen, such as a stomach ache. It is "measured" based on the patient's words and description. For example, a patient can be asked to rate the pain of a headache on a scale of 1 - 10, with 1 being almost pain free and 10 signaling the worst pain. On the other hand, a sign is what is actually seen and/or measured, such as blood pressure. Another example is the number of breaths a person takes per minute. They can be counted and movement of the chest can be seen. Respiratory alkalosis symptoms include the following:
1. Decreased level of consciousness
2. Confusion
3. Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in serum)
4. Blurred vision
5. Nausea and vomiting
6. Tingling sensation in the face and lips
7. Decreased cerebral perfusion
8. Muscle contractions
Causes of Respiratory Alkalosis
Remember that hyperventilation leads to seeing respiratory alkalosis symptoms and signs. So, when discussing the causes of the condition, it is important to consider what caused a person's breathing rate to be too high.
A drug overdose, particularly of aspirin, and a fever can cause hyperventilation (abnormally high rate of breathing). Also, artificial ventilations that are performed to rapidly lead to alkalosis. This is why training of emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and other health care professionals in emergency medicine stresses the need to resist hyperventilating a patient.
