What Is the Purpose of Biblical Genealogies?
Understandably, many people have asked why we need biblical genealogies. In the Old and New Testaments, the authors of the scriptures appear to be quite preoccupied with who begat whom. The detail is so great that often several passages of the word of God are dedicated to showing nothing but lineage. Or, are they?
Truth and Inspiration in Biblical Genealogies
The New Testament book of Matthew begins with the words, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren. And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom..." (KJV, Matthew 1:1-3).
The list of this and other biblical genealogies is much longer to include all who need to be included. Let's just focus on one part of the first book of Matthew: verse 5. It says, "And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth...." We focus on Ruth, because she was a Moabitess. The Moabites were a people who resulted from incest and were forbidden by God to enter the congregation of the chosen nation of Israel.
Nevertheless, we see that Ruth was the mother of Obed, who was the father of Jesse, who was the father of king David (Ruth 4:13-17, Matthew 1:5). This puts Ruth in the genealogy of the Lord Jesus! Yes, biblical genealogies were recorded by the will of God. Many people have mistakenly viewed the Moabites and other peoples and individuals as rejects of the Lord, because they do not understand spiritual truths. Ruth, a "reject" of God ended up in the lineage of the Son of God, along with others from "not-so-desirable" backgrounds. How did Ruth come to be a part of the greatest of all biblical genealogies? There are many things in the Bible that most people, including Christian believers, do not understand. Why? Because certain topics, subjects, and difficult questions are never raised, or when they are raised, they are never answered based on scripture. Sadly, lack of real understanding has caused many Christians to be ineffective in ministry. Many others have fallen away from the Lord completely.
Do not wait on or even expect Christian "leaders," including your own pastor, ministers, missionaries, or evangelists to teach you the word of God.
