How Did Cain Find a Wife?
Adam and Eve Not the First People?
Christians must admit that many people have good reason for asking the question: How did Cain find a wife? If Adam, Eve, Cain, and his brother Abel were the only people in the world, from where did this "mysterious" woman who was his wife come? Some have suggested that perhaps Adam and Eve were not the first people God created. They propose that the Lord must have created people who had started to populate the earth before the creation of Adam and Eve.
Others who ponder the question: How did Cain find a wife? suggest that there might be another creator who created man before the God of Israel made Adam and Eve. Neither of these two "explanations" agree with scripture of the Christian Bible. The Old Testament book of Genesis gives man the account of the Lord's activities regarding earth in the beginning. That biblical account shows Adam as the first man the Lord made. But, does the fact that Adam is mentioned first mean that he was the first man God made? Yes, that is what it means, because we read, "And so it is written, The FIRST man Adam was made a living soul..." (KJV, 1 Cor. 15:45).
The problem with the theory that another entity created men before God made Adam attributes creation power to a being that is not God. So, that theory also disagrees with the teachings of the scriptures. How then did Cain find a wife? The answer is: He married one of his sisters. And, the people of whom he was afraid were also his siblings, because they also were the offspring of Adam and Eve. Is that what scripture really says? Let's take a look.
The Children of Adam and Eve
By the end of the third chapter of Genesis, Adam and Eve have sinned and have been cast out of the garden of Eden. We then read, "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bare his brother Abel..." (Gen. 4:1-2). We then read that Cain murdered Abel and was sentenced by God to be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth for the murder he committed (Gen. 4:8-12). Next, we read that Cain spoke of his fear of being found by others in the earth and being killed for what he had done (Gen. 4:14). We then read, "And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife..." (Gen. 4:16-17). How did Cain find a wife; and from where did the other people come of whom he was afraid?
We read, "And in process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof..." (Gen. 4:3-4). The words, "IN PROCESS OF TIME," are being ignored when asking: How did Cain find a wife? The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve had many more children than just Cain, Abel, and Seth. Of course they had children during that "IN PROCESS OF TIME."
We read, "And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth. And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred year; and he begat sons and daughters. And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died" (Gen. 5:3-5). So, Adam lived to be 930 years old. He had Seth at age 130, which means that if Cain were his firstborn that he was younger than 130 when he fathered Cain and Abel. We know that he had Seth after the death of Abel, because Eve considered Seth a "replacement" of the murdered Abel (Gen. 4:25).
Now, scripture tells us that Adam had sons and daughters AFTER he had Seth at age 130. Why would we think that an even younger Adam would not have continued to have children "IN PROCESS OF TIME" as Cain and Abel grew? Think about that. Adam and Eve are a very young couple at the time of the birth of Cain and Abel. That young couple is going to have Cain and Abel and then just nothing--no more births? We never read once that Eve's womb was shut up. How did Cain find a wife? He married one of his sisters.
Some might ask why no other children are mentioned when the Bible speaks of Cain murdering Abel. The Bible said that Adam begat sons and daughters and that he lived almost 1,000 years. Even if he stopped having children around, say, 600 years old or so, his children would number into the hundreds and his grandchildren into the thousands! Nevertheless, only Cain, Abel and Seth are mentioned. Only three of his children are mentioned. Cain was the first to commit murder; and Seth was in the image and likeness of Adam. These three children of Adam and Eve were pointed out for specific reasons. There was no reason to list the names of the multitude of children of Adam. The offspring was numerous; and that's not considering the fact Eve could have had multiple sets of twins, triplets, or even quadruplets.
One Set of Parents for All
The scripture of Acts 17:26 teaches that God, "...Hath made of ONE BLOOD all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth...." This means that not only was Cain of the blood of Adam and Eve, his wife was also. The people of whom Cain was afraid would kill him as a fugitive and vagabond were of one blood--the blood of Adam and Eve. It is not difficult to answer the question: How did Cain find a wife?
