God Created Light Before the Sun? The Genesis Account of the Creation of Light
According to Genesis, God Created Light Before the Sun
The truth that there was light and day before there was a sun or moon (Gen. 1:3-5) reminds man that the sun, even in all of its brightness, is not light itself. It is only a celestial body that gives off light. Although Genesis 1:16 calls the sun, moon, and stars light, we can't forget that Jesus reminded that, by God's will, the men who carried God's word were themselves called gods (St. John 10:34-35). They were called gods because they were carriers of the word of God, not God himself. How does this relate to the biblical account of the creation of light? The sun, the moon, and the stars are bearers of light, so they are called lights, but they themselves are not light. The Lord himself calls his servants, "...the light of the world" (Mat. 5:14). Christians, however, are the light of the world only because they are bearers of, and reflections of that true light--Jesus. So, we can't get hung up on the sun, the moon, and the stars being called lights. They just hold and give off light. The are not light. True Christians hold and give off Jesus, but they are not Jesus. These are among the first truths that must be realized when asking how is it that God created light before the sun?
The Creation of Light in Genesis
The light on earth that exists because God said, "Let there be light," came into being in the beginning and is still around. It is the light that "fuels" the sun, the moon, and the stars. Why then can there be no light without the sun? But, there can be. Did not God allow us a glimpse into the glory of his power seen in the creation of light when we read that he gave Israel light, and left Egypt in the dark? We read, "And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in ALL the land of Egypt three days. They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days, but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings" (Exodus 10:22-23).
Scripture does not say that the sun rose on the Israelites. It does not say that the sun rose at all. In fact, we are told that ALL of Egypt was in darkness. How can the sun be shining and the land still be dark? How could the sun shine on one part of the land of Egypt and refuse to shine on the other part? There was no sun "light," yet the Jews had light. We are moving closer towards answering the question of how God created light before the sun. The light that God commanded to shine on the Earth is under his control, and is not dependent on a sun, a moon, or the stars. The fact that sunlight is the normal way of having day light, never should cause us to forget that light is (exists) because God created light. Light is because the Lord said, "Let there be light," not because he made a sun, a moon, or the stars (the sun is a star).
In the new Earth, "There shall be no night there, and they need no candle, neither light of the sun, for the Lord God giveth them light..." (Rev. 22:5). It is logical to ask how God created light before the sun. It is also enlightening to peer into the answers that biblical scripture has provided about the creation of light and of lights.
