Creation Science Broadcast From Space by Apollo 8 Crew: A Merry Apollo 8 Christmas
Earthrise Gives Rise to the Broadcast of Genesis Scripture from Outer Space
Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders made up the Apollo 8 crew who reached the moon's orbit via the awesome Saturn 5 rocket and broadcast from space an Apollo 8 Christmas message to the world--from another world. The year was 1968 and the Apollo 8 crew was ecstatic to finally approach the lunar world and contemplate the surface of the celestial body never before seen from Earth. All three astronauts freely admitted that they were actually more fascinated with the spectacular view of their home planet from outer space than they were with the moon. They were captivated as they witnessed earthrise which made them think about how tiny, fragile and beautiful Earth really is. They then spoke about the realization of the need for all mankind to respect one another and the little planet they had to share--as though that couldn't be realized from this world, which remains full of problems while man seeks to explore other worlds.
The Apollo 8 Christmas Message
I was surprised when I learned that the Apollo 8 crew, after being instructed to simply broadcast from space some that was "appropriate," read Genesis scripture or "glorified" creation science as some would put it. However, remembering that this took place during the sixties, it suddenly didn't seem quite so "out-of-place." That was a time when the overwhelming majority of the people of the United States believed in reverencing the living God of the Christian Bible without the shame and without the hostility that have slithered into modern North American society. So, what was the Apollo 8 Christmas message to Earth? The words of the Apollo 8 crew were:
"For all of the people back on Earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message that we would like to send to you. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters and God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light and God saw the light that it was good. And God divided the light from the darkness and God saw that it was good. And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a merry Christmas and God bless all of you, all on this good Earth."
It wasn't "politically incorrect" to broadcast from outer space to the entire earth a
merry Christmas. These brilliant astronauts who, undoubtedly, had been instructed in evolution, could have easily chosen to teach the Earth something about this ludicrous theory, or to describe to the people back on Earth what it was like to witness earthrise. They could have broadcast a patriotic message or glorified the United States for her achievements in technology. The crew of Apollo 8 could have encouraged "Earthlings" to believe that the science fiction of the Original Star Trek episodes would someday be science fact or they could have broadcast any number of "appropriate" messages. They could have read any of the stories of the creation of the world that exist in ancient Egyptian, Greek or Roman mythology. Instead, their broadcast from space was the reading of Genesis scripture or "creations science" that affirms that
God created Earth and light and separated the two; that his Spirit moved on the face of the deep, and that he called his work good--because he is Creator and his work is good.
