The Holy Trinity in the Bible: God in Three Persons
Three Gods or One God in Three Persons?
Understandably, some people are genuinely confused when they hear of the holy Trinity explained by Christians. Monotheism is the worship of only one God; and Christians are monotheistic. Therefore, they should worship and serve only one God. If, however, they see the holy Trinity in the Bible when they read scripture, how are they monotheistic?
They are monotheistic, because the triune God that they serve is ONE in mind, ONE in Spirit, ONE in purpose, ONE and equal in power, and ONE and equal in glory(Ephesians 4:3-6). God the Son said to God the Father, "...that they (believers) may be one, even as we are one" (KJV, St. John 17:22). This oneness makes one God, but that oneness does not annul the truth of ONE God in three persons. Are not many Christians called "one body in Christ?" Yes, they are, because that is what they are (Gal. 3:28). Many Christians are many persons, yet they are one body, not many bodies. Keep in mind that a set of three gods is not the same thing as one triune God, or in other words, God in three persons.
The Holy Trinity Explained in Scripture
This is not an exhaustive study of the subject of the Holy Trinity in the Bible, which is not necessary to gain understanding. Let's take a brief, but very important, look at the scriptures that clearly let us know that God is not in only one person. We will even see how the Bible specifically reveals to us that God is in three persons.
Genesis 1:26 records the Lord when he said, "Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness...." The words "us" and "our" denote plurality, yet only one Lord is speaking. All three persons of the triune God of Israel were one in their mind, Spirit, purpose, decisions, and actions to create mankind. This is the beginning of seeing the holy Trinity in the Bible.
Later in Genesis 18:1-3 we read, "And the Lord appeared unto him (Abraham) in the plains of Mamre. And he sat in the tent floor in the heat of the day. And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, THREE men stood by him. And when he saw THEM, he ran to meet THEM from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, and said, My Lord...."
This is God in three persons in the scriptures. Scripture does not say that the Lords (plural) appeared to Abraham. It says that the Lord (singular) appeared. The Lord appeared as THREE men. Scripture says that Abraham bowed before THEM; it did not say, "before him." Abraham bowed before his one God in three persons. Christians justifiably see the holy Trinity in the Bible.
Can we now better understand why the seraphims, heavenly beings who are very close to the throne of God, cried, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory" (Isaiah 6:3)? All three persons of the holy Trinity in the Bible are holy and equal in glory.
Again, in the scripture of Revelation 4:8, we see heavenly creatures worshiping God, saying, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come." Remember, Jesus said, "...Surely, I come quickly..." (Rev. 22:20). He is God to come--to come back, that is. He is part of the holy Trinity in the Bible.
Finally, let's take a look at the scripture of 1 John 5:6-9, which says, "This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost. And these THREE are ONE. And there are THREE that bear witness in earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood. And these THREE agree in ONE. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of GOD is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son."
In the above scripture, we see that God the Father, God the Spirit, and God the Word are mentioned as the witness who testified of God the Son. Remember that St. John 1:1 tells us that the Word is God. St. John 1:14 tells us that the Word was made flesh. Finally, numerous scriptures clearly tell us that Jesus is the Word; and he came to earth in the flesh. Therefore, though Jesus was fully man, he also was God in the flesh. Those scriptures include 1 John 4:2-3 and Rev. 19:13).
A study on the holy Trinity in the Bible and on the truth that God is in three persons would not be complete without full understanding of the role of Jesus in the Trinity. It is for this reason that we strongly recommend the reading of the following articles by Heavenly Manna:
