What Are the Characteristics of the AntiChrist?
"Anti" means against. Therefore, to be antiChrist is to be against Christ. What few people realize is that while scripture does speak of the number of the beast being 666, it also emphasizes knowing the characteristics of the antiChrist. Many people, including Christian leaders, have placed great emphasis on trying to identity the antiChrist. Sadly, few have taught the extreme importance of identifying what God's word calls the spirit of antiChrist. If we recognize the spirit of antiChrist, we will know the characteristics of the antiChrist.
What Is the Spirit of AntiChrist?
The word of God warns, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God. Because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. And this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world" (KJV, 1 John 4:1-3).
So, we see that the characteristics of the antiChrist were seen as far back as the Bible days. It is not anything that is new. What we learn is that denial that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is denial that Jesus Christ is God.
In St. John 1:1-1 we read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Further down in the same chapter, we are taught, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. John (the Baptist) bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me.... The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me; for he was before me." (St. John 1:14-15, 29).
It is not difficult to grasp. The Word was God; and the Word was made flesh. That means that God was made flesh. This is why the spirits who confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh acknowledge acceptance of the truth that Christ was both man and God. It also means that the spirits who will not confess that Christ came in the flesh are antiChrist. They display the characteristics of the antichrist. They deny and reject the truth the Jesus was both man and God, and is one of the three persons of the Godhead, commonly called the holy Trinity. This rejection itself is the head of the characteristics of the antiChrist.
Biblical Warning Regarding the Spirit of Antichrist
We read, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antiChrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father. He that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also" (1 John 2:22-23).
It does not matter how nice or even how "Christian" a person or a spirit might sound. If he or she or it denies the divinity of the Lord Jesus, the spirit of antichrist is at work. Knowing the characteristics of the spirit of antiChrist is what immediately identifies the entity behind any doctrine. For example, there are still many people who believe that Allah is just another name for the same God who is mentioned in the Bible--with a few minor differences.
Allah does not have a son. The God of Israel does. Followers of Islam do not accept the truth that Jesus is divine. Followers of the God of Israel do not accept the falsehood that he was not divine. It is clear that two entirely different entities are behind each of the doctrines. In the West, a person has a right to choose to follow either of the two doctrines. Nevertheless, that does not change the fact that the spirit, Allah, and the Spirit of the God of Israel, are entirely different beings.
