Is Lucifer and Satan the Same Entity?
Is Lucifer and Satan the Same as the Devil?
There are some people, including those who identify themselves as Christians, who teach that Lucifer is not the Devil. They use scripture to support their affirmations. Sometimes they point out the lack of scripture to support any teachings contrary to their beliefs about the identity of the arch-enemy of Christ. Genuine seekers of the truth desire to know how the word of God answers the question: Is Lucifer and Satan the same entity?
Scripture reads, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit" (KJV, Isaiah 14:12-15).
The entity in the Isaiah passage is called Lucifer. We know that he was in heaven, because we are told that he fell from heaven. We also know that he desired to ascend even higher in the heavenly realm, because of his quest to be like the most High, who is God. Finally, we are taught that Lucifer is cast down to hell, to the sides of a pit. We need this information to answer the question: Is Lucifer and Satan the same?
Satan Fell From Heaven
In the biblical passage of Luke 10:18, the Lord Jesus revealed an important truth when he said, "...I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Remember that the passage in Isaiah lets us know that Lucifer was called, "son of the morning." He shined like a star, so it is no wonder that his fall from heaven was like the brightness of lightning. Scripture tells us that Lucifer fell from heaven. It tells us also that Satan fell from heaven. This is only one of many scriptures that teach us to answer "yes" to the question: Is Lucifer and Satan the same entity?
The Clue of the Pit
The passage in Isaiah on Lucifer also told us that this being who desired to be like the most High, was cast down to hell, to the sides of the pit. What do we read in Revelation 20:1-3? We read, "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. And cast him into the bottomless pit."
Is Lucifer and Satan the same being? Scripture of the Christian Bible answers that question in the affirmative. Isaiah wrote that Lucifer weakened the nations. This means that he weakened the entire world. We are taught that, "...When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth..." (Rev. 20:7-8).
Lucifer weakens all of the nations of the world through deception. Are not lies told for the purpose of deceiving someone? Yes, they are; and Christ warned that the Devil is a liar and the father of lies (St. John 8:44).
Is Lucifer and Satan the same entity? The word of God answers, "yes."
