What Is Left Sided Heart Failure?
The left ventricle of the heart has to really work to pump sufficient blood throughout the entire body. When the left ventricle is no longer able to contract as forcefully as it needs to due to damage, left sided heart failure is imminent. The body attempts to compensate for the weakness of the left ventricle by having it pump faster and by enlarging the left ventricle. When the last "plan of action" fails, left sided heart failure is the result.
Understanding the very basics of the structure of the heart and how blood flows through it greatly helps to understand the consequences of left sided heart failure. The heart has four chambers or sections. The top two chambers are called the atria, also known as auricles; and the bottom two chambers are called ventricles.
The right side of the heart receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs where it is re-oxygenated, and where carbon dioxide is given up to be exhaled. The freshly oxygenated blood is sent to the the left atria (top chamber) through the pulmonary veins; "pulmonary" refers to the lungs. It is then sent to the left ventricle from which it will be pumped throughout the entire body.
Consequences of Left Sided Heart Failure
Remembering how blood flows through the heart, we know that the left ventricle receives blood from the left atria, which receives freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs through pulmonary veins. If the left ventricle cannot keep up with the flow it is receiving, a back-up in the pulmonary veins can occur. This causes a back-up in capillaries (the smallest of blood vessels) in the lungs. Pressure limits start to be exceeded, causing fluid to be pushed by that pressure into structures in the lungs where it should not be--the alveoli. The insufficient strength of the left ventricle is what leads to the back-up. The back-up leads to a build-up of too much pressure. Too much pressure leads to the pushing of fluid into the alveoli. This is congestion, thus it is called congestive heart failure (CHF). When CHF is caused by failed adaptations for a damaged left ventricle, it is known as left sided heart failure.
Pulmonary Edema and Left Sided Heart Failure
Remember that "pulmonary" refers to the lungs. "Edema" refers to abnormally high amounts of fluid (mostly water) found between cells in the tissues of the body. Left sided heart failure often leads to pulmonary edema, a very serious threat to life that must be promptly treated by a doctor.
Severe cases of pulmonary edema caused by left sided heart failure can produce lung sounds called "rales." These are crackling sounds that can typically be heard by laypeople who know how to use a stethoscope to listen to the lungs. Coughing up a pink and frothy substance is also one of the warning signs of congestive heart failure and should cause great concern and immediate summoning of medical help. Neglecting one's health carries grave consequences that medical science cannot fix. There is no cure for left sided heart failure.
