Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Jesus said to his disciples, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me" (KJV, St. John 15:26). Scripture lets us know that the Spirit of truth is the Comforter. It also identifies the Comforter as the Holy Ghost, also called the Holy Spirit of God (St John 14:26).
Many people who are truly in distress have been greatly disappointed in Christian churches in their search for answers and at least some comfort. Why? There are various reasons for people not finding consolation in the presence or in the counsel of Christians who claim to be guided by the the Spirit of the God of all comfort--the Comforter. Among the principle reasons are: Christians with insufficient understanding of the scriptures to give counsel from them, lack of genuine concern for others, lack of experience suffering trials and tribulation in life as Christians.
There are some Christian believers who have true concern for others and who have above average understanding of biblical scripture. However, even they are not always able to be of real consolation. This does not mean that they do not truly serve the God of all comfort or that they are not guided by his Spirit, the Comforter. Nevertheless, their help is often limited because they have not experienced the cruel life that some of the people who come into their midst have.
While no one should have to personally experience trials and tribulations in order to have concern for others, those who have are almost always much more effective in ministry than those who have led a protected and easy life. Does the Christian Bible shed any light on this topic?
The apostle Paul said, "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God" (Corinthians 1:3-4).
The many sayings and proverbs about understanding others only by having walked in their shoes or in their "skin" are absolutely true. Those who have received strength from the Spirit of the God of all comfort, the Comforter, are almost always more effective to turn and be of comfort to others than those who have not known fiery trials and tribulation. This is why Paul said, "...that we may be ABLE to comfort them which are in any trouble."
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
