God's Forgiveness During the Trial of Faith
The Fiery Trial of Faith
The apostle Peter wrote, "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad with exceeding joy" (I Peter 4:12-13).
What many Christians in the West would call the fiery trial of faith is simply the reality of harsh daily life for a good number of believers in nations where the gospel of Jesus is restricted and they are martyred for their faith. Nevertheless, a lesson can be learned for all believers in whatever their specific trial of faith is, whether fiery to them or not.
A trial of faith can last a moment or it can last for years. Most people, including true Christians with a positive attitude, become worn out and worn down after battling a trial of faith year after year. Confusion over what the Lord is doing--or not doing sets in. Frustration and hopelessness accompany confusion when prayer and action seem to fail to remedy the situation. And weariness joins in when there's no more strength or will power to keep fighting. Finally, anger tops everything off because it appears that defeat is the outcome after much battling. Angry thoughts become angry, and sometimes profane words. Those thoughts and words can and often do lead to sinful action or to the sin of complete inaction.
Those who truly love and want to serve God, however, remain in misery because the desire to serve the Lord continues to linger. It is during these times that the counsel of the scripture of Hebrews 4:14-16 should come to mind. It says, "Seeing then that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (of faith). For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
God's Forgiveness Before His Throne of Grace
The battle-weary believer who has sinned and/or fallen weak during the trial of his or her faith is advised by God's word to go boldly before the throne of grace for God's forgiveness and mercy in times of need. Hebrews 4:15-16 says, "For we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (of faith). For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
We may be ever so embarrassed or tired of needing to be forgiven or renewed; but the counsel is the same. It's better to have to receive
God's forgiveness now rather than loose fellowship and communion with him, and ultimately, salvation.
"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ, the righteous and he is the propitiation for our sins..." (1 John 2:1-2).
