Islam and Christianity: Is There Really a Difference?
Similarities Between Islam and Christianity
Followers of Christianity and Islam claim belief in only one God, though that has not always been the case with Islam. Both sets of followers claim they serve a merciful and just God. Both sets of followers believe in life after death, in preaching the teachings of their Bibles, and in seeking the conversion of people of other faiths to their faith. In fact, the similarities between Islam and Christianity can appear so numerous that many people are genuinely confused regarding the differences. Are there any differences that are significant enough to continue the division that exists between the followers of both faiths? Yes, there are. In fact, one difference is of such significance that even if all others were dismissed, true followers of the doctrine of Allah and true followers of the doctrine of Christ could never unite and be true to their Masters.
The Principle Cause of Division Between Islam and Christianity
Muslims affirm belief in Jesus; however, the description of the Jesus in which they believe is not the same as the Jesus described by the Christian Bible. This is not opinion; this is fact that can easily be verified by comparing what Islam teaches about Christ and by picking up a Bible and reading what it teaches about Christ. None of the other differences between Islam and Christianity divide like the opposing beliefs do when it comes to who Jesus is. What about the description of Jesus is so important that makes it the most important reason for division between the followers of Islam and Christianity?
The Christian Bible says that Jesus is the Christ of God (1 John 2:22). It says that he is the Son of God (St. John 3:16); and it says that he is one of the three persons of the God Head (1 John 5:7), sometimes referred to as the trinity. Muslims reject that Jesus is God or that God even has a son, as such a teaching is not upheld in the Koran. This is not a debate about who is correct. This is simply a comparison of the reason above all other reasons why Islam and Christianity are so far apart though they appear to be very similar. This is about the logical application of common sense that two opposing teachings cannot both be true. If Jesus is not God, Christians are guilty of idol worship, because they worship a man. If Jesus is God, Muslims would be guilty of rejecting God by refusing to worship the Son of God.
Who Is Jesus?
Some people might understandably say that the question of who Jesus is should not continue to be a division among the followers of Islam and Christianity. Why can't the two sets of followers live in harmony--the one with their beliefs about who Jesus is, and the other with their beliefs? Because belief about Jesus is the work of spirits, not man. This is true whether a person believes or rejects that Christ is the Son of God. Two spirits in disagreement produce two sets of followers in disagreement.
The Christian biblical scripture of Matthew 16:13-17 reads, "When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist, some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."
Now, neither the Christian Bible nor the Muslim Koran states that there are two Fathers in heaven. If the Father is revealing that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of the living God to people, what other father is revealing the opposite? It's clear that this difference between Islam and Christianity reveals that the entities behind the two faiths are in disagreement. How can it be expected for their followers to agree? Yes, The principle difference between Christianity and Islam can actually be summed up in only one word--Jesus.
