What Does the Bible Say About Drug Abuse?
Drug Abuse Is Not a Modern Problem
Many people mistakenly think that drug abuse is a problem of the modern world because they are not aware of the heavy dependence upon mind-altering herbs that have been used extensively since ancient times. A good number of the religious rituals performed by ancient peoples such as the Incas, Mayans, the various tribes of Africa and Europe, involved the use of hallucinogens. Shocking behavior such as self-decapitation took place under the influence of trances and mind-altering drugs. So, what does the Bible say about the abuse of drugs?
No New Thing Under the Sun
During the 1960s in the United States, the drug abuse problem really began to rear its very ugly head even in small towns. Some who were "victims" of drug abuse were known to climb buildings, thinking that they could fly, while others displayed equally disturbing behavior. Hearing of someone decapitating himself might sound incredible; however, equally incredible actions have been performed under the influence of mind-altering drugs. In fact, the destruction associated with drug abuse has always been around. This is why God's word deals with it and has already taught that, "The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof if may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us" (KJV, Ecclesiastes 1:9-10).
The methods change, but the basic mind sets and actions of man don't change. It used to be said frequently that an idle mind is the Devil's work shop. However, there's something even more dangerous than an idle mind--a mind that has been altered by drugs. The Christian Bible warns about drug abuse. Peter warned, "Be SOBER, be vigilant, because your adversary the
devil, as a
roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
No one under the influence of drugs or anything that alters the mind can be called sober. If he is not sober, how can he be vigilant? If he is not vigilant, how can he watch for danger? If he does not watch for danger, how can he remain safe? There are so many more scriptures that warn about the care that must be taken to
protect one's mind. However, this is certainly a starting point.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. Mr. Bolton:
How long have you been a Christian? Because Christians do not experiment with psychedelic drugs such as 5-Me-O-DMT. Do you have a habit? If so, how did you get the habit? If you have a habit, what are you doing to overcome it?
