Is Satan Real? What Did Jesus of Nazareth Think?
Is the Devil Real?
Jesus of Nazareth was not silent on the question, "Is the Devil real?" Did he give a specific answer? What did he say and where in the scriptures does he deal with this important topic on spirituality? Jesus said, "If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?..." (KJV, Luke 11:18). There's much revealed in this scripture regarding the falsehood of exorcisms; however, that is beyond this article. The emphasis here is on the words of Jesus of Nazareth which give an answer to the question, "Is the Devil real?" Three truths are provided in these few words of the Savior. First, he acknowledges the real existence of Satan in the presence of many people. Second, he speaks of a being known as the Devil who has a kingdom of his own. Third, obviously, this being is an intelligent one or he couldn't be the ruler of a kingdom.
Why should the words of Jesus of Nazareth carry any weight in answering the question, "Is Satan real?" One might ask, "Is Jesus of Nazareth himself real?" Although some Christians might immediately become defensive upon hearing such a question, it is, in the minds of some people, a legitimate question. Those who've never had a relationship with the Lord might honestly wonder how anyone can believe in the Bible. Sadly, only a tiny percentage of Christian believers can clearly show proof of the veracity and amazing infallibility of God's word. The article, "Free Sunday School Lesson: Amazing and Interesting Bible Facts" introduces the accuracy of biblical teachings on many branches of "modern" sciences including biology, biogenesis, hydrology, meteorology and others--and this is only an introduction.
When Lucifer Fell
Jesus of Nazareth also declared, "...I beheld (saw) Satan as lightning fall from heaven" (Luke 10:18). This passage reminds the Christian believer of the Old Testament passage of Isaiah 14:12-15 which reads, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High (God). Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit" (Isaiah 14:12-15).
Again, biblical scripture clearly provides an answer to the question, "Is the devil real?" Obviously, the being of which the passage speaks has the intelligence to weaken entire nations through deception (Rev. 12:9). He has the intelligence to scheme and plot an attempt to overthrow the throne of the most High to which he does not want to be subject. He's intelligent enough to yearn and dream of ruling in the place of the sovereign God. Is
Satan real? The words of
Jesus of Nazareth compel an answer of "yes."
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
