Christian Songs: The Only Music for Christians?
Many Christians have come into the knowledge of the disturbance that the sounds of hard rock and heavy metal music can cause. This disturbance is almost always intensified at heavy metal rock concerts, causing many to understandably reject what is labeled as Christian hard rock music as entertainment that is becoming to believers. However, rhythm and beat are not the only things to be considered when speaking of what elements make up Christian songs or of songs that might be spiritually weakening to believers. Fortunately, Christian lyrics have been put to country western music, pop music, the rhythms of reggae as well as other genres of music. But, just how important are Christian lyrics? Can followers of Christ listen to melodious music with lyrics that are not directed to God or should they stick to Christian songs?
Beautiful Music, No Christian Lyrics
The song, "She's Gone," by the duet Hall and Oates, who understandably made a number of hit songs during the 1970s and 1980s, is one of many prime examples of melodious songs that do not have Christian lyrics.
In the song, the duet sings about the desire for the return of a girlfriend and includes the lyrics, "I'd pay the devil to replace her." Is there anything wrong with a Christian listening to such a song? Isn't it understood that a believer would not literally consider working witchcraft or having any other dealings with the Satanic kingdom for the return of a girlfriend or boyfriend, or even a spouse? Those who truly love Jesus would answer, "No." So, what problem could there be in expanding beyond Christian songs, in listening to music that does not accompany Christian lyrics?
In the article, What Does the Bible Say About the Power of Words?, readers learn that words can have such power that they bring about literal blessings and curses. They can cause damnation; and man will one day give account of even the idle words he speaks. If the Bible reveals such power in words, is it not logical to think that there might be something wrong with Christian believers listening to lyrics such as, "I'd pay the devil to replace her?" Listening to lyrics inevitably leads to singing those same lyrics, because the music as a whole affects the mind and spirit. This is why people will often speak about hearing a song and then having the mind to sing the lyrics of that song the rest of the day--even after the music is no longer playing.
King David Was Careful With His Words
The scripture of Psalm 16:4, part of a michtam of king David, reads, "Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god. Their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips." David knew that he had no inclination to serve idol gods; nevertheless, he didn't let his guard down and he remained careful about the power of words. He didn't allow just anything to be pronounced by his lips. This is only one of numerous examples of God's people being careful about their speech.
Heavenly Manna does not hold to the teaching that believers should always restrict themselves to listening to Christian songs or music with Christian lyrics. Some songs that do not have Christian lyrics also are free of lyrics that are offensive to God. For example, the song, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Temptations, has lyrics that are true to life. The groups sings about the deception, lies, envy, jealousy, and ill will that is often behind smiling faces. They warn their listeners to beware. The Bible also speaks of the danger of deception behind smiling faces. They sing about truth. There are no Christian lyrics to the song, nor did the group sing Christian songs. This doesn't mean, however, that a believer can't listen to a song that simply sings about the things that are true to life and is free of anti-Christian lyrics.
