Painful Menstruation: Chamomile to The Rescue
Painful menstruation may be caused by what is known as a "tilted" womb, endometriosis, or a number of other ailments. If physical problems and disease have been eliminated as the cause for painful menses, consideration should be given to alternative medicine. Some women simply experience more discomfort during their cycle than others. Stress and diet certainly play a role in how much discomfort is endured, but what is to be done when stress and diet are not the problems?
Chamomile, also known as German Chamomile, although common, is a very effective all natural remedy for painful menstruation. The flowers are the part of the medicinal plant that is used to make an herbal infusion. Fortunately, chamomile, sometimes spelled "camomile," is widely available in most grocery stores and is one of the safest herbs in nature. It is even safe enough to be given to very young children; therefore, young girls may consume it without worry.
A very strong chamomile infusion is prepared with either tea bags purchased in the store or from the bulk herb (the dried flower heads). One cup of boiling water is poured over between 2 and 3 heaping teaspoons of the bulk herb or 3 tea bags. This is allowed to steep for at least 5 minutes after which an all natural sweetener may be added for taste. Honey, preferably raw, stevia extract, blue agave syrup, pure maple syrup, or dark brown sugar may be used to sweeten to taste. The tea should be drank while still very hot. Chamomile is especially beneficial in relieving menstrual cramps caused by suppressed menstruation (Penny C. Royal, Herbally Yours [Provo, UT: Sound Nutrition, 1988], 19).
It's very important to keep in mind that chamomile is only effective against menstrual cramps when adequate amounts are consumed. What is an adequate amount? Most women will have to drink at least 4 cups of strong tea to experience results. Some will find enough relief to cut the use of their over-the-counter pain reliever in half, others will find that chamomile needs no help at all.
The advantage to relying on all natural herbal medicines is the beneficial "side" effects experienced while taking them. Chamomile has proven to be a most wonderful remedy for indigestion. It has also brought swift relief in the treatment of colds in children. Again, enough of the herbal infusion must be drank. Chamomile may be purchased in capsule form. However, consumers should verify that the only ingredient filling the capsule is pure chamomile.
