New Age Thought and Christianity
The Core of New Age Thought
While there are many teachings offered by believers in New Age thought, the bulk of them revolve around three principle beliefs:
1. Man is a divine being.
2. Man is evolving into a being of higher consciousness.
3. Regardless of what the Christian Bible says, there is no such thing as sin.
Although followers of New Age thought reject biblical scripture as truth, ironically, many will quote scripture from the word of God to support their teachings and philosophies. This is precisely why many people are understandably confused over the differences between New Age thought and Christianity.
Man Is Divine
The biblical scripture of Genesis 3:22 reads, "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us...." This is one of the more popular scriptures used to support the New Age thought that man is divine, that he is a god. New Agers state that God himself declared that man had become as he is. Since God is divine, man must also be divine. It's interesting to note that preachers of this teaching do not mention why or when it was that God said this. It was after Adam and Eve had eaten from the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden at the tempting of Satan.
We read, "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods..." (KJV, Genesis 3:5). Satan tempted Adam and Eve with the very same thing he had desired and over which he made war in heaven--to be god. In fact, he wanted to be higher than God (Isaiah 14:12-14). One of the principle teachings from New Age thought is the idea that man is his own god. We should see the unmasking of the true author of such a falsehood. We are reminded that scripture declares, "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes" (Psalm 82:6-7). New Age thought and Christianity often are considered to be connected; they are not connected.
Evolution Towards Higher Consciousness
The theme of many episodes of the classic Star Trek revolved around the belief that man is evolving towards a higher consciousness. This "higher consciousness" is one of a state of complete peace, perfect kindness, and flawlessness in thought, philosophy, and relations with others. Again, we see the serious disagreement between New Age thought and Christianity when we receive the truths revealed in God's word.
The Christian Bible teaches what the only "higher consciousness" acceptable to God is--transformation into the likeness of his Son, Christ. God's word teaches that Christ is man's only righteousness, wisdom, Savior, deliverer, healer, and so much more. These things are not found within man himself. We read:
"...Not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith" (Philippians 3:9).
"...Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." (1 Corinthians 1:24).
"...Christ, the Savior of the world" (St. John 4:42).
"...Thou art my help and my deliverer..." (Psalm 40:17).
"...I am the Lord that healeth thee." (Exodus 15:26).
No Such Thing as Sin
New Age thought and Christianity again are poles apart when it comes to belief about original sin and man's sin nature. New Agers reject the truth that Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden and shun the reality that their descendants are all born sinners. This is another of the falsehoods very important to New Age philosophy, because if there is no sin, there is no need for a Savior. The word of God, however, says:
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
"If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us" (1 John 1:10).
"...Christ died for our sins..." (1 Corinthians 15:3).
New Age thought and Christianity do not and can not mix.
