Dual Personality and Multiple Personalities: What Does the Christian Bible say?
The Multiple Personalities of Sybil
Sybil, a woman who is believed to have developed between 13 and 16 distinct personalities, was diagnosed by her doctor with what was known at that time as multiple personalities. Years of hideous abuse as a child is believed to be the cause of her multiple personalities, each of whom supposedly represented a part of her true personality that had been damaged by the abuse. Vanessa was the keeper of her music abilities. Vickie was sophisticated, sociable and allowed Sybil to interact in situations requiring social skills with which her abusive mother had interfered.
There were at least eleven other personalities, two of whom were male. One of the multiple personalities of Sybil was called Marsha, who apparently attempted, on more than one occasion, to kill her by suicide. While the personalities appeared to have simply been various aspects of the real Sybil, the presence of Marsha, the one who wanted to kill her, should raise high suspicion that there was more going on than just the splitting of various aspects of Sybil's nature into distinct personalities. Jesus taught that, "The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to KILL, and to destroy..." (KJV, St. John 10:10). The whole goal of the Satanic kingdom is to steal life in all of its forms.
A Type of Dual Personality Described in Biblical Scripture
Romans 7:14-24 says, "For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do, I allow not; for what I would (do), that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not (don't want to do), I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man. But, I see another law in my members (body), waring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"
A very talented Christian writer once pointed out that the apostle Paul, in the scripture of Romans 7:14-24 describes the struggle that exists between two distinct and opposing mind sets that reside within the Christian believer. One is the "old man," which represents the sinful nature or "personality" with which everyone is born. The other is called the "new man" or a new "creature" in Christ, which takes on a divine nature in obedience to God (2 Peter 1:4).
The old man or sinful nature /personality of an individual, including Christians, does not like God. He cannot love, obey or have communion with God because of his nature. The new man in Christ, however, is not carnally minded or sinful in his nature, so he's the only one who can have communion with the Lord. The old sinful nature of a person has likes, beliefs, behavior, and an agenda that is distinct and in sharp disagreement with the new creature in Christ. The old man and the new man reside in the same body. This could very loosely be called dual personality by mental health care professionals. However, God's word calls the struggle between a man's sin nature and his new divine nature in Christ a spiritual matter. The matter involves only two types of spirits--the Holy Spirit which supplies the divine and obedient nature of Christian believers and the spirit of the flesh which is evil, simply because it opposes God.
What's very interesting is that God's word teaches us that all spirits are either holy or unholy. They are good or they are evil; and they belong to the kingdom of God or to the kingdom of Satan. There are no neutral spirits; and spirits are never on any middle ground. The scriptures that teach this truth are found in the article,
Is There Such a Thing As Neutral Supernatural Beings?. This knowledge gives us to understand that in reality, dual personality and multiple personalities are spiritual conditions brought about either by the Holy Spirit or evil spirits which are involved in any kind of abuse.
Christian believers in whom
the Holy Spirit dwells and influences have the same basic nature--a divine one of which 2 Peter 1:4 speaks. The true body of Christ of which there are many members (believers) is of one MIND and is on one accord, being guided by the one and same Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:4-6, Philippians 2:2). "Personalities that oppose and are hostile towards
Christ are not of God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
