He Came to Set the Captives Free by Rebecca Brown MD: A Review
Doorways to involvement with the occult, the gruesome and diabolical sacrifice of animals, babies and adults that take place within groups that practice true Satanism, and the infiltration of the Christian church by practitioners of witchcraft and Satanism are just some of the topics with which Rebecca Brown deals in her book, He Came to Set the Captives Free. Sadly, these are very unpopular subjects in the vast majority of Christian churches, Bible studies, Sunday school classes and even seminary training curricula. While there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from reading He Came to Set the Captives Free as well as other books by Rebecca Brown MD, not all that the author teaches is in agreement with scripture of the Christian Bible. This is why it is so very important for believers to read and study God's word for themselves instead of relying on learning everything about walking with Jesus from even the most respected Christian leader, teacher or author.
Rebecca Brown Vs. the Christian Bible on Angels
In He Came To Set The Captives Free, Rebecca Brown speaks in detail about a visit that she was paid from what she believe was an angel of God. She emphasizes that she was careful to make sure that the angel was indeed from the kingdom of heaven and not from Satan by testing the spirit according to the instructions of the scripture of 1 John 4:1-3 which says to try the spirits to see whether they are of God. The authors states that the angel described the Jesus of the Holy Bible as the one he serves and to which he belongs. All sounds good, though the conversation between Dr. Brown and the angel sounds very dramatic. She writes that the angel is her guardian angel who was sent with a message for her from the Father. Rebecca Brown teaches that everyone has a guardian angel to protect him or her from birth--such is the love of the Father, she explains. The scripture used to support the teaching is Hebrews 1:13-14 which says, "But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
That passage in Hebrews does not say anything about every person being assigned a guardian angel. It simply lets the believer know that God's
angels are ministering spirits in service to people who have received Jesus as Savior and are therefore heirs of salvation. How does this translate into everyone having a guardian angel? First, everyone is not an heir to salvation, because man has free will to accept or reject Jesus. Second, if every individual has a guardian angel, how does Dr. Brown explain the fatal accidents that happen to people and that often cause premature death? Where is a person's guardian angel when he or she, believer or not, is so distraught that suicide is committed? Where is the guardian angel who has been assigned to the many children, elderly, and mentally challenged adults who face daily abuse and torture? While the Christian Bible makes is clear that God, at his will, does sometimes dispatch his angels to minister to man, there is no scripture that supports belief that every person has been assigned a guardian angel for protection.
Rebecca Brown Asks Her Guardian Angel About Jesus
The angelic visit that Dr. Brown describes in He Came To Set The Captives Free also includes the conversation that took place with the angelic being. She asks him what Jesus is like and is told that Jesus is beautiful with a smile that fills the entire universe with warmth and love. What does Jesus look like? We know that Jesus, the man, was not physically beautiful (Isaiah 53:1-2) and we are given a description by scripture of what Jesus, the Lord looks like (Revelation 1:12-16). None of the conversations that took place between man and angel recorded in the Bible resemble what appears to be very casual conversation in the case of Dr. Brown with her guardian angel.
Angelic Instructions for the Armour of God
One aspect of the conversation between Rebecca Brown MD and her "guardian" angel in He Came To Set The Captives Free that should raise some questions is the answer that the angel gave to Dr. Brown who asked him how to put on the armour of God. She writes that the angel told her to pray asking the Father to put the complete armour on her and then to thank him (the Father) in Jesus' name. Dr. Brown then asks him how often the armour should be put on, a question to which the angel responded. He said that the Father says that once every twenty-four hours is sufficient. He went on to answer further questions about dressing in the armour of God.
Why couldn't Dr. Brown learn about the armour of God and how to dress in it from the same source other believers are learning--the Bible? What is more is that biblical scripture doesn't quite answer like the angel with whom Rebecca Brown visited for more than two hours. The scripture of Ephesians 6:13 says, "Wherefore TAKE unto you the whole armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day...." Scripture tells the believer to TAKE the
armour of God; it does not say to pray to the Father asking him to put it on us. How do we take the armour of God? Again, scripture answers that question and it mentions nothing about being protected for a period of twenty-four hours. Verse seventeen of the sixth chapter of Ephesians mentions the last two pieces of the
armour of God to be taken, which are the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. Verse seventeen is the exact instructions that must be followed that result in the believer TAKING the armour. Those two verses read, "And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all
prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit is how the believer TAKES the
armour of God unto him or herself.
The Conclusion
He Came To Set The Captives Free by Rebecca Brown MD is a valuable book. All of the teachings that are in perfect agreement with scripture from the Christian Bible should be accepted as truth without question. Those teachings, however, that just don't fully agree with the written word of God should be questioned and/or dismissed for what actual scripture says when there is a discrepancy.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. Comments/Comentarios:
I just wanted to comment on the fact that each of us as individuals do have a Guardian Angel assigned to us but whether we put them to use is a different thing altogether. She may have used a wrong Scripture but there is a scripture that supports this. See Matt. 18:10 and if we read the chapter from verse 1, we see that Jesus was talking about little children, so every child born has one and just because the child is not born again yet does not mean the child loses his or her Angel. We are the Most protected Beings on earth but then we suffer or even die or commit suicide like you said because we do not realise just about how protected we are and so do not make use of the angelic protection at our disposal. Thank You.

To Mr. Bolutife:
The word "guardian" never appears in Matthew 18:10, which is NOT speaking about angelic beings. The word "angel" in the Bible refers also to the spirit of man and even to the Spirit of God, who obviously does not have a guardian angel. We can't just add the word "guardian" or any other word into Scripture. So, Matthew 18:10 is not scriptural proof of "guardian" angels. The Bible teaches man to call directly on the Lord for protection, not on angels. Name one scripture that supports man calling directly to angels for protection.
