Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
A visit to the average church service during which prayer takes place will cause truly Spirit-filled and guided believers to question the absence of much needed intercessory prayer.
Sunday worship services, Bible study classes and even many prayer meetings are usually made up of the church's members and a few visitors from the local area on occasions. It's customary to pray at every meeting and gathering which would appear to offer ample opportunity to pray according to scripture which reveals the will of God. It offers ample opportunity to make supplications and intercessions before the throne of God for the people and situations that the Bible reveals are of importance to God. Judging by the usual prayers that are made, there are only certain people that tend to be important enough to be lifted before God. They tend to be family members or friends of the members of the church.
While it's absolutely scriptural and good to pray for family and friends, what ever happened to Christian love for those who are not family or friends? Many American Christians live in extremely comfortable conditions and seem to forget, or perhaps never think about the lives that endure daily tribulation. Where are the sincere supplications for God to intervene in the lives of the babies, children, animals and elderly that languish daily in the slums of inner cities and the war torn zones of various countries? When are intercessions ever made for the unspeakable abuse, neglect, torture, satanic sacrifice and unnecessary killing of the animals that God created and called good--and of the bondage of the people who commit such acts? These animals continue to suffer behind closed doors, in research laboratories, factory farming, and ritualistic killings. Does God care anything about the animals? The scripture of Matthew 10:29 reveals that God takes notice of every sparrow that falls to the ground.
How many church-going believers ever stop to think about the salvation of their favorite celebrities instead of bordering on worshiping them as so many do who claim no relationship with Christ? When are intercessions ever made for the persecuted Christians who are martyred daily for their faith in Jesus--the brothers and sisters of Christians in the "protected" Western Hemisphere. The list could go on and on until becoming overwhelming. The point is that something is very wrong when entire groups of people and horrendous, but real life suffering of man and beast is ignored and forgotten.
The Son of God died a horrific death in his love for the very people so often forgotten by those who claim that he lives in them. The apostle Paul wrote, " I exhort therefore that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for ALL men; for kings (political leaders), and for all that are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth" (KJV, 1 Timothy 2:1-4).
Paul also warned all believers when he wrote, "though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (love), I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy and understandeth all mysteries, and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have not charity (love), I am nothing" (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
