Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The Free Choice to Reject God
The scripture of Deuteronomy 30:19 reads, "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore, choose life that both thou and thy seed may live." This is only one of many passages in the Christian Bible that lets man know that he has free will--the option to receive or reject God. He can choose to love Christ or he can be antichristian. The fact that there are consequences to face if he chooses to reject God doesn't mean he can't elect to face those consequences.
Nothing Can Stop the Gospel
Just as there are many scriptures that remind of man's free will to receive or to reject God, there also are passages that remind that nothing can stop the gospel. This is why we read, "And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought. But, if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God" (KJV, Acts 5:38-39).
The fact, however, that nothing can stop the gospel doesn't mean that there are people who won't try. What these people don't realize or don't believe are the biblical warnings against such attempts to fight against the work of God--to fight against someone else receiving Jesus as his or her Lord. They also are warned against interfering with someone's walk with Jesus as in bringing an end to someone's salvation by attempting to cause that individual to fall away from God's grace. This is known as an "offence" in the scriptures. What are some of the biblical warnings concerning such antichristian behavior?
Matthew 18:6-7 warns, "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences!...." The same biblical warning in the Living Bible Paraphrased reads, "But if any of you causes one of these little ones who trusts in me to lose his faith, it would be better for you to have a rock tied to your neck and be thrown into the sea. Woe upon the world for all its evils...."
"Little ones" can refer to literal little children who believe in God or who are being taught about God and to adults who are "little children" or "babes" in Christ. What God's word is reminding everyone of is the truth that while each person has the freedom to reject God, no one will interfere with someone else receiving or continuing to walk with Jesus and escape the consequences.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
