Although I'm not Catholic, I attended a Catholic high school for almost two years. I remember being in Language Arts class when, during a discussion led by our teacher that we were all having, one young lady asked, "What is truth?" Several students, including myself, fell silent as we pondered the thought-provoking question. Looking back on that scene now, I see a terribly flawed picture, a class full of students in a school where many thought that belief in God and the Bible were embraced and where most of those students were taking religion classes. What went wrong that an entire class of students knew so little about the Bible that they couldn't answer a simple question like, "What is truth?"
The scripture of St. John 14:6 records the words of Christ when he said, "...I am the way, the truth, and the life...." St. John 17:17 reminds, "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth." Not only had it never been explained to any of those young people that God's word is truth whether speaking of religious, spiritual, or philosophical questions, they weren't even aware of the existence of such scriptures. Of course, most of them had never been encouraged to read the Bible for themselves and the lessons in the booklets used in religion classes strategically avoided the mention of certain scriptures.
Jesus' words, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," even when read, are seldom fully absorbed to emphasize the need for those who will truly believe God's word to discern falsehood from truth. Even the world warns, "Not all that glitters is gold." How much more God's word warns, "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (KJV, II Cor. 11:14). There are literally a host of scriptures from the Old to the New Testament which speak of how imperative it is that the followers of Christ know the truth of God's word so they may be protected from the deception of false doctrine (II Tim. 4:3), sheep in wolves clothes (Mat. 10:16), the craftiness of the ministers of Satan (II Cor. 11:14-15), the leaven of the pharisees (Mat. 16:11), impostors of Christ and false prophets (Mat. 24:24).
What is truth? God's word is truth and deals with both natural and supernatural questions, mysteries of life, psychology, philosophy, questions about health, relationships, science, the past, the present, the future, and eternity. Jesus wasn't using symbolism, speaking in parables, or enigmas when he declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
