Scripture of The Day - 1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Free Youth Bible Lessons that Encourage Young People to Walk With Jesus
Setting the Foundation for a Young Person's Walk With Jesus
These free youth Bible lessons are designed to help lay the foundation on which young people can build their faith in God. Christianity today, unfortunately, often presents the Bible more as a book of suggestions for righteous living rather than one of instruction. Why? The belief that God's word is outdated and, therefore, cannot possibly be followed for dealing with the problems of a modern world--an erroneous belief that scripture has already warned against.
Raise Questions and Let the Bible Answer Them
The questions below are some that you might want to ask your students in order to initiate discussion and discover beliefs that are in disagreement with God's word.
1. Can Christianity today be compared with how Christians lived in times past?
2. Can a person's walk with Jesus in modern times truly be based on scripture that was written in antiquity?
3. How can the Bible possibly deal with the problems that have been created in a technologically advanced world?
4. Does the Bible itself answer any of these questions?
You'll then want to remind your students that the answer to every important question has an answer in God's word--including this one regarding Christianity today.
Scriptural Basis for These Free Youth Bible Lessons
It is almost always a good idea to involve each student in the study which can be accomplished by now assigning them to locate the following scriptures in the Bible, scriptures they can read out loud as a group. This also reinforces the need to read the Bible for oneself instead of picking up the very bad habit of simply repeating what someone else has said about the Bible which often proves to be inaccurate or totally untrue. Those scriptures are:
1. Old Testament - Psalm 100:5 says, "For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth to all generations."
2. Old Testament - Isaiah 40:8 teaches, "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of God shall stand forever."
3. New Testament - 1 Peter 1:25 reminds, "But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."
These scriptures cannot make it any clearer that God's word is never outdated, but is relevant for every generation. Take the time to explain that scripture won't always use modern terms such as "genetic engineering," but rather the activities of whatever is being talked about are clearly spelled out so that there's no doubt concerning what the question, topic, problem or subject is. For example, genetically engineered foods, referred to by some as monster foods or "frankenfoods," because of their ability to literally destroy health, is not a subject on which the Bible is silent. God warned his people not to mingle the seeds that they sowed to create new foods or to let different kinds of animals mate to produce new species (Leviticus 19:19). Not even the most impressive technology of man is a match for God, and some technological advances are often in direct defiance of God's power. You'll want to be sure to remind the students that these are not the only scriptures that guide us in defining Christianity today, rather they are among many that reinforce the truths to be learned in these free youth Bible lessons.
Let God's Word Sink In
You don't want to neglect the need to emphasize to your young students the need to pay attention to what they're reading, to let the
word of God sink in to bring their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs into obedience to him. It's also useful to emphasize their need to accept God's correction, counsel, and advice if they want to be heard when they call on him and remind them that once they have been enlightened to any truth, they can never return to the innocence they had before they came into the knowledge. This is why
Jesus warned, "If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin, but now they have no cloke (covering) for their sin" (St. John 15:22).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
