Chamomile: One of the Best Herbal Sedatives If Properly Used
Herbal sedatives, like their chemical counterparts, are all natural and generally milder substances that strongly quiet the nervous system. Valerian, hops, skullcap, catnip, kava kava, passion flower, and chamomile tea are among the world's most effective herbal sedatives that have been used with wonderful results since antiquity. People who have little or no knowledge about the proper use of herbs are advised to begin with the mild ones that tend to be safe enough even for very young children. Chamomile is one of the safest herbs on earth, but by no means does this mean that it is "play" medicine simply because it's safe. When combined with a truly healthy diet, the medicinal properties of safe herbs often surpass those of chemical "medicines."
How to Use Chamomile Tea as a Sedative
Chamomile tea is traditionally prepared by pouring 8 ounces of boiling water over a heaping teaspoon of the flowers and allowing the infusion to steep for a few minutes. While this preparation is useful for helping to settle a slightly upset stomach or can be slightly sweetened to serve as a beverage, such a weak preparation of chamomile tea cannot even begin to act as a sedative, especially on an adult. A bare minimum of two very strong cups of the tea are needed to begin quieting the nerves. This translates to pouring 16 ounces of boiling water over at least 6 full tablespoons of the fresh or dried flowers and allowing at least 10 minutes for steeping. Both cups would need to be drank within an hour. The more there's a desire to be sedated, the more strong tea is needed. First, you will become groggy and want to lie down after which you should quickly fall asleep and stay asleep. Remember, chamomile is extremely safe, you can literally replace your water with it even if you're among the few people who drink eight glasses of water per day.
The Other Benefits of Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is an excellent herbal remedy for menstrual cramps and for suppressed menstruation; again, unfortunately, to produce results, voracious amounts of the tea must be drank which in turn presents common chamomile tea side effects which include grogginess. The herb is also very effective for helping to treat respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis; however, it is much too mild to rely upon for complete recuperation from such health problems. Much stronger herbs are needed in the case of alternative medicine for conditions that can be dangerous such a asthma and
bronchitis--herbs like elecampane root and wild black cherry bark. Externally, chamomile is very effective in eliminating dandruff and acting as a mild conditioner for the hair, but people who have very dark hair and want to keep it that way might want to avoid pouring tea made from this herb over their hair; it might cause slight lightening over a long period of time. Fortunately, this alternative medicine can be purchased in the average grocery store.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
