Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The biblical scripture of Psalm 111:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom...." Thanks be to God for parents, teachers, role models, and anyone else who not only embraced this truth, but also taught it to their children, shared it with their students and lived it out in front of those to whom they served as role models. Although the Bible says that the people who will stand before the Lamb of God who redeemed them are so numerous that they can't be numbered; sadly, many refuse to accept Christ as their Savior and Lord. Nevertheless, a good number of these people have proper fear of God, realizing that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
They are people who, as long as they maintain their fear of God, never become capable of committing atrocities. Some years back, I was involved in Christian ministries for the incarcerated. I don't believe there was even one inmate with whom I worked who wasn't concerned about what I thought of him or her and the crime/s he or she had committed. Although I never solicited information about their criminal background--at least not from them, almost all of them volunteered it and it checked out. One inmate in particular with a long list of convictions stood out because I remember him admitting that he would have committed crimes worse than what he had already done had it not been for his fear of God. I thought to myself that if he did these things having some fear of God, what would he have done had he not feared the Lord?
I'm certainly not saying that just because someone has fear of God that he or she isn't a threat to society; however, those who don't fear the Lord should never be underestimated because many are capable of monstrous deeds. It should also be remembered that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, not the perfection of it. It's only the beginning, but that beginning can serve as a powerful buffer against becoming a monster. Some people erroneously think that there's something cool or heroic about being fearless, not realizing that their lack of fear is a revelation of their complete lack of even the beginning of wisdom. "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe and tremble" (KJV, James 2:19).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
