Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
I remember being a visitor to a church one night during Bible study after which it was their practice to close with prayer according to the requests made by those in attendance. Prayer requests were varied, but none of them except one had anything to do with concern for others coming into the knowledge of God's word and the meaning of salvation. People sought prayer for a job they wanted, a promotion on a job they already had, safety while traveling to go on vacation, healing from a minor illness, better family relations, etc. While there's certainly nothing wrong with a servant of God requesting things like this in prayer, why are prayers almost always exclusively for oneself, one's family, blessings, help, healing, and the like? Where are the genuine, God-inspired prayers for others who wish that their only worry was as simple as getting a promotion on their job? Serving God requires doing the will of God whose word not only spoke of the Lord's will for his people to prosper, but also for men everywhere to come into the knowledge of his word and be saved. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but, is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing (wanting) that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (KJV, II Peter 3:9). All Christian ministries truly ordained by God, regardless of their "specialty," revolve around the doing of God's will which is for man to come to repentance.
One lady in the Bible study raised her hand to add a request to the prayer list. She spoke of something she had seen on television either that night before or a few nights ago and the impact that what she had seen had had on her. Basically, her request had to do with the people whose story had made the news, people in a very sad situation who, in their search for relief, had become involved with the occult. Knowing the spiritual darkness that this leads to, the woman requested prayer for the family; her request was received with little enthusiasm. I recently spoke with another brother in Christ who, in the midst of his own troubles, wants to be involved in Christian ministries that are reaching out to prisoners and to those whose lifestyle will soon land them in prison, but his church just isn't that interested in serving God in such a capacity.
The servant of God is the one who does his will whether his or her church is a support or not. If you are stirred by God to pray for someone, to demonstrate the love of Christ, the authority of the Bible, or to do any other activity that is met with disinterest by those from whom you would expect support, don't be discouraged. Many Christian ministries greatly used by God, whether they are large or small, had very humble beginnings. You just might be those beginnings. Also, keep in mind that the true servant of God serves whether he is ordained by man or not, whether he has an official platform or not, and whether he has the attention and encouragement of other members of the body of Christ or not. Always remember that, "...It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (KJV, Philippians 2:13).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
