Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Most of the Sunday school lessons and Bible studies conducted in a large number of today's Christian churches focus almost exclusively on God's love for man and are practically void of biblical teachings regarding the Christian believer's need to love God back. It has been explained by a few ministers, missionaries, and Bible teachers that a true relationship with the Lord is not one-sided, that God is a "gentleman" who doesn't force anyone into a relationship with him. What does that mean? It means that his servants don't only receive his love, they love him back. This biblical truth is so vital that it is repeated in various ways throughout scripture. In fact, to love God is the first commandment.
The scripture of Mark 12:29-30 is an account of the words of Jesus who taught, "...The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment." If the believer doesn't want to keep the first commandment, how will he be obedient to subsequent ones? It is good to sincerely ask how to love God because it is asking how to keep the very first commandment. It's also good to know why it's so important to come to love God.
Most spiritual truths can be compared to natural ones that help to facilitate understanding. The people in our lives whom we love can often persuade us to do things we wouldn't do for someone we don't love. We want to please them, to be close to them, and maintain the relationship. If believers would actually study their Bible instead of quickly reading over it, they would discover that even the closest servants of God had, at times, to endure experiences that were very unpleasant for them, but they refused to disobey their Lord with whom maintaining a relationship was more important than life itself. It takes the vast majority of people some time to experience what it really means to fall in love with God and those who haven't experienced this cannot understand what it's like; but, if they've received Jesus as Lord, coming to love him according to the scripture of Mark 12:29-30 should be greatly desire.
If you love God with all your heart, you will keep his commandments and enjoy his love and faithfulness back to you. Jesus said, "If a man love me, he will keep my words and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode (dwelling) with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings..." (KJV, St. John 14:23-24). This doesn't mean that you won't ever sin again; however, those who love God don't live in sin which is to consciously disobey his word daily. Some people will attempt to defend behavior that the Bible clearly condemns according to the understanding of a child in grade school by saying that they have God in their heart regardless of what their outward behavior is. The Bible says otherwise; it explains that to love God is to obey God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
