Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The Old Testament book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, begins with the Lord's miraculous creation of the world, the heavens, the heavenly bodies, animals, plants, and even man. Genesis 18:14 asks, "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" This is only one of numerous scriptures throughout the Bible that translate into "God can do anything." The New Testament scripture of St. Luke 1:37 reminds, "For with God nothing shall be impossible." A true believer in Christ yearns to say the words, "My God can do anything," and actually believe what he or she says. There are a variety of reasons for which many Christians struggle with their faith in God. Some want to have the blessing that it is to trust God while continuing to stubbornly disobey him, some are shamefully deficient in their knowledge of the Bible to even know the will, precepts, and law of Christ. Others desire to have a strong faith in God only when they are found in times of trouble while forgetting him as long as all is well. There are also those who are simply tired of waiting for God to do the seemingly impossible.
Ironically, a person's walk with Jesus and belief that God can do anything can actually be strengthened by sometimes focusing on the one thing that the Bible says God cannot do. What could that thing possibly be? How could the Lord speak entire worlds, heavenly bodies, plant and animal life, and man into existence and be incapable of anything? The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the power, authority, and perpetual sovereignty of the Creator, the most High. Does the same Bible also reveal that there's something that God cannot do? Yes, it does. It's revealed, not to unmask some inefficiency in the Lord, but rather to drive home the truth that God is almighty. Yes, the Christian who is obedient to God, who has a genuine, daily walk with Jesus, is actually inspired to declare, "My God can do anything" when he or she meditates on the one thing of which the Lord is incapable.
Scripture says, "Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness. In hope of eternal life which God that CANNOT LIE, promised before the world began" (Titus 1:2). God can do anything--except lie, the one thing of which he is incapable. When believers read the promises of God, they are reminded that it's impossible for God to lie. When the scriptures speak of the blessings, faithfulness, and goodness of God, they know they read truth because the Lord is unable to tell a lie. When they read of the Lord's warnings, again they know that God can do anything--except speak a lie. This means all that the Savior declares is pure truth, however impossible it might sound or appear.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
